Off Road Web Sites Disappearing?

There are a couple of sites that I use and follow for off roading around here, but I am noticing that as some of these site now have gained much notoriety, for some reason they are going off line.

Quads.ca been off line since April 19 2013, rumours of a costly upgrade required

DualSportMaps.com free software and api no longer available and gonna take a big chunk of cash to keep going, doubt if they will get the money they need

BCORMA.ca not sure why but its down, but has not been updated in a long time, also needs a costly upgrade, just cant get volunteers to do the work.

One thing these sites all have in common is there are no user fees and updated by volunteers (sound familiar?) Im hoping this is not a sign of the future or is just natural selection?

Some of these sites seem to have many sponsors. Do they pay in cash or another means, not enough to run the sites?

quads.ca for a few years was a pretty lively site with tons of daily posts untill a few years ago the moderation became slightly strict causing alot of hourly addicted users to look elsewhere for their entertainment.Add to that some mixed feelings on a few contraversial threads on quad thefts, club members, atvbc, and many bleeding hearts also using the site it wouldnt suprise me to see the site dissapear completly.
Its to bad really as greg did a bang up job on the site until he became a softy, the writing was on the wall when it got to the point he had to edit posts made by users,i would imagine he got tired of listening to all the childish complaints from users and had to put his foot down causing the downward spiral
i remember i used to log in morning noon and night to find at least 20 or more new posts each visit and now i log in once a month maybe to find 20 new posts

hopefully greg gets back up and running
seems quads.ca is one of his many passions

BCORMA back on line

Guess it just takes time for the volunteers to overcome what the spammers and other low lifes do to the sites

Forum sites attract too many "wannabees" who have nothing better to do than stir up shit-storms. Always seems to happen at some time or another, good moderators can keep it under control but requires a lot of effort if their is too many people of the wrong sort posting.

I launched a new website last year called Motor Sport Rider. You can post route information on there including GPS files. If the GPS file contains a track it can be displayed in Google Maps, otherwise you can manually create the route in the website. The mapping function isn't as advanced as that in DualSportMaps.com, but it does use the latest Google Maps API.

The website url is: http://motorsportrider.net
