Painting plastics

Has anyone had any luck painting the plastics on their bikes? I am hestitant as I don't want my bike to look like I rattle can sprayed it in my backyard during a dust storm. Can it be done where it looks stock and will not flake or peel? I am thinking of doing it this winter when I do a tear down and spend some time on it. My plastics are hard to come by and I don't want to ruin them but they are baby blue....opinions...suggestions...Thanks! :hb:

The best tip for painting plastics on DS bikes is DON'T!!!!! it will end up as a mess.
There are few other options to painting:
1) replace, they are not as expensive as street bike fairings
2) stickers.... I mean cool new graphics
3) scrapes can be sanded down with progressively finer sand paper
4) faded and stressed plastics can be restored with a hairdryer

Unfortunatelly I have had a lot of experience wit this over the years..........

That is the advice I was looking for. The plastics are mint, shiny and not broken but babyblue. Soooo looks like I will try and find some white plastics and do it properly. Thanks!

Take your mint plastic off...buy some after market plastic...when you go to sellthe bikeput your mint stuff back on....just like new again.:clap:

thats the plan now..just have to find a source for new plastics that does not require removal of a body part I have grown attached to...

Believe or not I can still get aftermarket plastic for my 1974 kx 400.:shock:Look online ,I'm sure you will be able to find something.:clap:

Oh you guys,,,,,,,, I paint cars an do autobody.....you can paint plastic just fine....Just have a look at My KLR sometime....you just need a few different things ...some patience....an yes it works an sticks JUST FINE...Research it on google....OR just PM me an Ill give you the low down.....or like stated above buy new stuff...:hbaul.S

you can paint plastic easily, yet it will scratch and look terrible over time. Regardless, I would not paint your DT blue plastics... that bike is a bit of a collector piece in factory colours. Go aftermarket and keep your resale value up!

One other consideration may be a vinyl wrap - Should be more durable than painted plastics without the price of new bits and peices.

if its faded and scraped plastics you're trying to spruce up, I found the MaximaSC-1 " New bike in a can!" made my faded plastics come back to life. Sand to 800gr. and spray, wipe, ride. looks frigg'n amazing.( i ride one of those, aheam...pinkish KLR's so the SC-1 is a staple of my manhood) i hear tooo that Lemon pledge works well too. one tip tho, after using either products painting may be out of the question, they are silicone.

Otherwise, plastic prep, plastic prime, paint, clear...then join the parade, at the back.
