The 3rd day ended in Woodland Ca. after a full day of rain. With gear scattered all over my motel room it was time for a well earned tortilla soup and Modelo negro beer.
Day 4 started out wet but cleared off well before noon withthe sun reappearing but with large menacing looking black storm clouds scattered about, which were all missed thank you very much. The mission today was Barstow and I arrived just at dusk. Perfect. Next day Barstow to Borrego Springs. The wet late spring was a bonus for the desert flowers as there were gajillions of them and in all shades of the rainbow (ok, almost). From below Barstow to Bay of LA Mexico everywhere along the way, flowers.
and the flowers were attracting more than insects, they were attracting tourists and in many places the roadside was littered with stopped cars.
after awhile I realized that the splats on the windshield were the same color as the flowers in each area.
at the 247 cafe again.
Along the way just off route 66 I came across a road closed (large and wide) sign on box Canyon Rd. Clearly people have been passing the signs by so when in Rome. The canyon had recently been ravaged by floods and in places the road is simply gone but it made for the most fun on the trip so far.
I think i'll wait til that dust devil passes.
not exactly closed,
some cool looking birds nest riddled Hoodoos.
deep sand and likely over 600 lb of loaded bike requires your full attention. or else, eat dirt!
your friends here are named, Momentum and Throttle!
these signs were at the other end of the "road closed" (not!) section the beginning signs went from roadside to roadside acting like they meant it, whoops my bad.
The flowers weren't the only show in town as the Joshua trees were blooming as well.
relatively short day to Borrego but very scenic. Met up with Steve (eagleguy) who was in the middle of packing up and moving out of his/their current park. Taking time out for me, he lead me up into the hills to a really neat state park with large boulders scattered everywhere. I thanked him and set about making camp, in a lightly raining cold hurricane! the most difficulty I've had in getting the tent up in over 25 yrs of use. Pretty wild night of camping, it was cold and though under starry skies it was, as already said raining with the high winds blowing the rain up and over the top of the hill just west of camp. The night was just fine and by morning the wind had died and the sun was up in a clear sky.
last pic. for this post. of that camp. This pic. which was shot over exposed as the sun was close to set, was taken before digging a moat across the front of the tent to deflect possible running water and there's a good sized piece of wood under the side stand just in case. That very large Austrian bike is absolutely being used as a windbreak which also was lashed to the tree, just in case and the tent was lashed to the bike. And if you looked straight up it was a clear sky.
I gave up on any hope of a properly placed groundsheet
next post travels into Mexico and a wee bit of mud!
