Positive Neutral Finder

Kawasaki Canada's website claims that the KLR650 has the positive neutral finder that only allows selecting neutral from first gear at a stop, not going through neutral and into second. My 2004 doesn't have this featureand the owner's manual makes no mention either. Does anyone know if this was added for 2006 or was it on other model years then dropped? I think Kawasaki employed the same ad guy at one time that Yamaha used to do the 17,500 rpm R6 campaign.

My '99 can find neutral while in motion. I also found neutral between 3rd an d4th the other day :mad3:.

You may have stumbled on the first ever recorded instance of advertising copy not "quite" lining up with reality. Congratulations

Ah yes the mysterious 3-4 neutral, I find it almost every time I'm hard on the gas triing to get into traffic, ya I know my shifting needs werk.

Hi G-ray, the "neutral finder" isn`t a part, it`s an extra detent on a shift drum. Kawi has been mentioning this "feature" for half a century. If yours isn`t working try less clutch free play or synth. oil or slower shifting. Still no luck? Try a early 390 Husky with idle set way to high, you can sit there all day and not get neutral. Boy, I wish I only had your problems to worry about. Leon:)

Actually in my ZZR1200the "positive neutral finder" is about 3 extra bits. 3 steel balls are located inbetween 5th gear and the output shaft. They are thrown out centrifugally when the transmissions output shaft is spinning allowing 5th the full range of it's lateral movement along the output shaft. When the output shaft stops spinning at least one of the steel balls falls back into the shaft limiting 5th gear movement and the movement of the shift drum. The drum can now only select 1st or neutral. I don't have a factory service manual for the KLR to see whats inside it's tranny so I'm only guessing from riding it a couple of times that it doesn't have this mechanism (and that the Kawasaki site is mistaken). The clutch and transmission both are working fine, no false neutrals and the real neutral is easily found.
