Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering a sweet looking 2000 TE610. Is it possible to add a keyed ignition? My reasoning for this is that the bike will be parked in my (somewhat) secure underground parking stall. I want to add the ignition so it's a little bit more difficult for the bike to grow legs. Yes, I know it's easy enough to steal by loading it onto a truck, but a keyed ignition would make me feel a bit better, especially when I'm catching z's at a busy campground.

Most keyed ignition switches I have seen can be hot wired in less time than it takes to say where's my bike. Personally I would spend my money on the best locking system I could buy if it were in underground parking and I would definitely have theft insurance.

A key switch might be good for appearance sake and there are lots of aftermarkettypes available.

my 2 cents....otg

a dakar kit will have the keyed ignition built in -so get that -i think a 2000 610 is not street legal AFAIK.. i put a dakar kiton my 05 510- cost $600 and $800 to install at the shop here in KELOWNA..as far as theft stuff,if i lived in a condo or somewhere that had underground parking i would not have my bike or fancy car down there -the places are" heat scores "and i would store my toys elsewhere [in my opinion] thieves are brazen and have no soul and will eventually steal your stuff......

I have a 05 te 450 that has a aftermarket dualsport kit on it, it had no key switch when i bought it. I was in the same position as you, i wanted a little piece of mind as well. I bought a key switch from canadian tire and installed it in line with the igntion coil, the bike will not run unless the switch is in the "on" Position, it will still crank over if there is no key, but it wont fire. (i look at it as a bit of a warning that someone is trying to steal it when they try to start it with no key) i know its not a perfect fix,and it is pretty easy to hot wire it,but it does ad a little piece of mind.
