Hey Friends!
My name is Matthew. I'm the owner of RallyMotoShop. We're based in Vancouver, and are the worlds largest supplier of equipment for building Rally bikes, and racing events such as Dakar. We can also help you build the Adventure Bike of your dreams.
We love to talk Rally, and are always happy to chat and answer questions, but I thought I would share a few resources we use to get you started:
This is a quick primer that we have used in our schools for Dakar training. Not all of the safety equipment will apply, but the navigation explanations are really useful. Note- the FIM updated the lexicon recently, so it's in english not french now.

A media piece from Red Bull about roadbooks:

This is a great video a few of our friends put together showing how roadbook reading and rally navigation works in the real world on a real rally stage:
I'm not really a video game guy, but this is the official Dakar video game. You don't need any particular gaming equipment (you can play just with a keyboard on your computer, though a cheap game controller is much better). It allows you to practice reading and implementing a roadbook and build your skills sequentially. Many of us use it as evening training when we can't actually be out getting seat time:

My friend Manny made a video of him using the game to train for Dakar:
This is the Rally Navigator software designed for creating roadbooks. You can use this to create your own roadbooks in your area for training and practice. This can be useful not only for the practice of physically running roadbooks, but the act of creating them will build your understanding of how they work and what the markings actually translate to in the real world.

Cheers, and reach out anytime.
