STARTING DIFFICULTIES

Need some help on this one! Annie Sunday's DR650 vintage 90, is reluctant to start from cold. Seems that it's OK when warm and not too bad when ridden every day, but leave the brute for a week and it becomes a right leg work out. Twenty kicks isn't unusual after it's been standing a few days. Something's gotta change.............So I've checked fuel flow and I believe it's OK. Air filter is clean. Valve clearances have been reset. New plugs installed and spark appeares OK. Carb has been cleaned and jet needle is set on second groove up. Pilot screw is set at 1 1/2 turnsout. I should mention that the bike has a Supertrapp exhaust system...........................I'VE GOT NOWHERE ELSE TO GO!!!:shoot:.......................PIRATE

Pirate, how often and how much do you use the bike? Possibly contaminated fuel or water in fuel. Try some methanol hydrateand then empty the float bowl, should be a drain plug at the bottom.

Have you checked the choke/coldstart function on the carb? Might help to use cleans and/or do the whole carb?????

Or get her a KLR like yours.

Dude..I have a 91 thats almost new.And it's a bit of a bitch to start cold.:X

What I do is 1/2 choke and kick it 3-4 times full throttle,then One good kick with no throttle. It will fire first orsecond time without throttle. Works every morning for me,No matter how long it sits. These Bikes are sensitive to start cold!!!.Your probably flooding it. Try it and let me know

One more thing...Dont use regular gas.. Every 3-4 tanks I add octane boostto premium fuel and my bike runs way better and starts easy.:tup:

I think I'll try the methanol hydrate. This problem has only started since the last fill up and some water could be in the gas tank. I had the carb completely apart just a few nights ago and blew air through all the jets and orifices. The bowl float hieght was out of spec which I corrected but that shouldn't affect starting. The pilot screw was way out at six turns out. Factory preset is 1 1/4 turns out. I thought that might have been it, but no luck. If there was water in the gas tank then I would have contaminated the carb again!...............Thanks Lars.

Thanks for the advice Big White DR. That's a nice looking DR,I'm sure I can see some shrink wrap left on it........OK to be fair, Annie Sunday's bike has always been easy to start until recently. Full choke,two kicks and away it goes. If it's been sitting for a couple of weeks then maybe five, still with fullchoke.Also she has only ever ran it on regular gasas per manual specs and it's never indicated a dislike.......However, I havehad the carb apart and made some adjustments, so your starting method may now be the one that works, so I shall also try it as well. As for the gas, I will try that at the end................Many thanx.................PIRATE.

Seems the starting problems have eased somewhat on Annie Sunday's DR. We tried the methanol hydrate and it failed to make a difference. We tried Big White DR's starting methods and they also failed to make a difference. However, we did take Big's advice on the premium fuel and it's now back to starting in it's normal mode. Annie also reports that the bike is running and idleing better than ever before. I feel this is a combination of the fuel and the carb adjustments that were made..................Thanks for the support.
