Stud'em up

First off......

I was home sick one day last week and wifey went out shopping for an hour or two. Well imagine my suprise when she came home early and caught me doing something that ....um...errr......that maybe I should be doing.

Hey...who's that on the TV.... Sharron Stone!:mi:

Well she caught me red handed:D

Anyhow the boy is really itch'n to ride his new CRF230. He took it out in the back yard last weekend ag fter I installed the Acerbes lever guards, and tore up the grass......and the snow is like 1 foot deep out there:tup:. I figure this weekend coming up we could go do a good rip up in Batch but the snow will be prety deep up there. So....might as well stud up the bikes.

We will do the 230 first , then stud up the ol'650

Bought 400 #8x 1/2" sheet metal screws. I remember back in the day when these screws also had a slot in them for a flat blade screw-driver, that allowed extra traction I think.

I stopped to se Chris (Mustex) at Leading Edge to see if he had a used 21" tire that would be good for studding up . He gave me a free one:tup:...it's not too good for bush stuff cuz it has a cpl cuts on the side wall but not into the cords , but will work fine for the first season of winter riding for my son.

I showed Connor what to do and off he went:hf:

He went right back at it after dinner. I think he realizes how much fun he is going to have.

So the mitas on the back of the DR650 is to worn to stud up so I went out in the snow bank and dug out the old "Death-Wing":hr:

I tried a few screws in it and it looks like it will work fine.

I just wounder if it will not dig through the snow verry good without knobies.

Connor hashis front almost done and is hitting close to 150 screws. I think this pattern on the "Death-Wing" will be arround 500:hr:

I can remember years back rigging my Yamaha dirt bike for snow, I spent a couple of hours driving screws into the tires only to have most of the the back screws skip out on the first burn { I should of used longer screws}. After that I cut some old drive chain into short lengths, deflated the rear tire, tied the lengths around the tire at 1/8th intervals and reinflated in effect making a snow paddle. I checked to make sure I had swingarm clearance and off I went, the setup worked pretty good especially in the soft stuff, but a little clunky on the glaze.

Well I looked arround and found some better screws for the rear tires on our bikes. They have the slot so I think they will have a little more grip (if they stay in) a little longer due to wear.

SO I cleaned out the "Death-Wing" and started screwing arround.

I put 4 per lug(mostly) and the tire is 3/4 finished with 500 screws installed. The screws are $5 for a pack of 100:spl:

That looks like way too much fun.

I tried the screw trick one winter. Front ones worked fine but the back ones turned my nice new blue rear fender into a blue with white poka-dot fender as it spit them off the tire. Just make sure no-one gets in your "line of fire".

A buddy of mine had a cool trick. He used pan head machine screws that he installed from the inside of the tire. He then screwed nuts on the outside and TIGed them to lock them on. There was about half an inch of screw above the nut. Then he vulcanized an old inner tube to the inside of the tire to protect his tube from the pan heads. The bloody thing weighed an extra ten pounds but he used it in the 24 hour "Num Bum" race up north with no problems at all. He said he would use stainless screws next time for better wear though.

Now where's my mikita and tire irons....................

Yeah .....I expect to loose some of the screws. But it will sure be fun loosing them.

I have about 170 of these things also. Maybe use them next year.

This sounds like a real hoot!:hr:

What about fitting 1/4" Carriage bolts from the inside, with Nylock nuts on the outside ? The Carriage bolts should be smooth enough on the inside to leave the inner tube intact. Bit more expensive that metal screws, but they would stay in I guess.

Cheers Ian:hb:

hehehe....................

came down with a case of the stomache flue:mad3:

Stay tuned. Next weekend we ride. Anyone else joining us? The ride will not be on any single track because the snow is far too deep out there. We willbe heading up to Nobel lakevia the road. It is no longer accessable by truck but the sleds have "groomed" the trail so it should be prety fun.:hf::hf::hf:

Oh yeah. The trail Wing took 900 studs:hr:

Very cool Joker! If I didn't have the summit I would have my old bike full of screws right now. Perhaps one of these would work in the deeper snow

Yeah Ty ...If I had all ur money I WOULD buy one or 2 of those toys:dr:

But we went out to the shop tonight and Connor got a start on the rear tire.

Mean while I removed the front wheel and installed the 'new' skin on the frontrim and then put back on the bike.

3 more packs and the rear will be finished:hf:

And there's SUZI.....just itch'n to GO!:hf: Will get her done on Saturday:ted:

It doesn't really take a long time to get these tires studed up . We just havent really been working on them too much.

So today I saw my son's riding skills improve by 300%

It's amazing what a little horse power can do.

W kinda got Shiang-hi'd into a church thing thismorning that went on a little longer that expected so I didn't get the DR finished up ,but Connor was ready to go as soon as we got home. He threw on his riding gear and loaded the new bike.

We went up to Batch so he could try out the snow.

There was a hill that was a good spot to try out the new found HP

The studs hooked up prety good and the 230cc engine seems to have some prety good bottom end grunt and is able rev out nicely without bogging.

YES.....he LOVES his new horse power. He said it many times.

I even seen him do a cpl rear wheel out crossed power turns! He NEVER did that on the 80:clap:

SO after about 1 hour in te snow it was time for a Hot Chocolate brake.

ThisCRF 230is a perfect fit for the step into the full size bikes.

Time to unload and check out the studs. GREAT...none have come out yet:tup:

I'll tell you why, Mark.

The next stage is when the 230 is 'not powerful enough Dad' ! Then he get's a job and buy's a KLR and goes out with Sheldon and Dad down Harrison West. He completely destroys Dad on his DRZ400, hanging on a mere 10 seconds behind Sheldons BMW and is consistantly saying 'come on, we hav'nt got all Day!!':wi: The final insult is when he brings back some gorgeous Brunette and asks "can I take Racheal out into the woods on your 950 ?. She'd like that.":mi:. (I bet she would !).

I tell you Greg, It won't be very long. Enjoy every minuit of it !!

Cheers Ian:hb:
