Swing arm bearings not greased right at the factory?

:f:Hi All. It has come to my attention that after getting the new tires on my bike and finding out that the axels where not very well lubed at all, what about the swing arm?

This seems to be on the net alot that the assembly is not high in quality, and the arm is not lubed properly at all. It does bother me that I have purchased a new machine and expect that the parts are all in order as a staring point to keep it that way.


I am very fond of my KLR and I just want to make sure that I do not have problems with her that I can avoid by doing some things myself.

If your going to be riding in wet muddy conditions I think it's a good idea to make sure that all bearings and pivot points are well greased. A lot of new bikes do not get greased properly from the manufacturer.I bought my XR650R new last year and it had very little grease in the swing arm. So if you want peace of mind it's best to do it.

New bikes do not usually have grease in the bushings.:mad3: They only have the thin layer of packing grease that you find on any new bearing.:shoot:

I make it a practice to take apart all the linkage on any bike I get and grease it. I found my crf450x was almost dry when I got it new.

Spend the time and it will pay off in spades as the years roll on.

Try buying a Husqvrna. After endless slopp and mud, my front wheel bearings didn't even need to be looked at, but wtf, cleaned them out and did them anyway.
Rear tires are gone thru so many times, that I allways inspect and throw some grease in there anyway. You get what you pay for and I'v noticed the Husky uses premium bearings. Sort of like BMW with their Telelever bearings. They have "FAG" stamped on them, which is a premium bearing, but you can't get these bearings anywhere but a BMW (rippoff) shop because BMW has bought the propiatariy rights.

I believe that he was asking about the swing arm BUSHINGS not bearings. I'll bet a tube of grease that if you take a new husky apart from the factory that the bushings have the same lack of grease that all other manufacturers have. Now I don't know if the local Husky dealer greases the bushings before delivery (he can be tricky like that:D) that is why I said check from the factory.

As for the bearings most if not all manufacturers now use a good quality sealed bearing in the wheels. If you put a little extra lube on the axel it helps make sure the axel will never seize to the inside of the bearings. That can happen with any bearing if it is left long enough. You would usually see this on something like a KLR due to the fact that they see mud and dirt like a dirt bike but can run tires that will last for 15,000km like a street bike. It is like the perfect storm for killing wheel bearings ect. Lots of miles without having to take the axel out for cleaning and service.

Husqvarna's come from the factory with grease fittings and grease filled. Don't need to take them apart.

Most Jap brands only but a small film on all the bearings . Just enough so that they do not squeak. It's a good idea if you buy a new Jap brand to grease all your linkage before you ride.

Or better yet just get a Husqvarna
