The Big Trip 2008

About a year ago, my buddy and I started talking about a week-long ride somewhere cool (we had no idea where at the time), so we started making plans. He is in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and I wasin Edmonton Alberta. So after many nights plotting and scheming on MSN Messenger, we eventually made plans to head south into the US an check out some of Montana and Idaho, before taking the long way home through southern BC. We were both sporting helmet-cams and decided to record as much of the trip as we could. We got back in Aug, and I have finally finished editing

Enough yapping...I'll let the video do the talking.

BTW...to the bottom right of the youtube viewer, you should see an option to "watch in high-quality". If you have hi-speed, definately hit that button!!

Awesome ride and report, the narration and editing are first class.
Give us a report on the two bike.

Thanks!! Both bikes did great. This was our first big trip, so we took it real easy. Next year should have a little more gravel/adventure. The Strom was a little more comfortable (speed-wise)on the straight stretches of slab, but there weren't too many of those. The KLR definitely had the advantage on the Grey Creek Pass. Unfortunately, Hammy was running on some pretty bald Dunlops, and was pretty nervous on the sharp rocks. Both bikes handled the twisties equally well. The Bow Valley Parkway, and 3A along Kootenay Lake let us test that. I have wicked scuffs on my panniers from leaning into the corners on the BVP. The KLR burned a little oil on the days we had a lot of highway miles, but nothing too serious (if you look in some of the pics of the bikes in camp, you can see Hammy's white bottle of Amzoil next to the KLR);). I hate to admit that the KLR got more attention. Everywhere we went, people were drawn to the KLR. Even other dual-sporters wanted to know about the new model. I also think the KLR has a slightly more comforatble riding position. The Strom had a lot more get up and go on the pavement (passing RVs and semis were not a problem at 120kph). Both very capable DSbikes, just have strengths in different areas.

What did you use for helmet cams? The quality of the footage is quite good.

Thanks for sharing.

Good job guys.:tup::tup:

Reminds me of the first big rides that hooked me on motorcycles, lucky for me I never lost that feeling. I am sure any new riders watching these videos will get the bug to do their own trip

Thanks

"What did you use for helmet cams? The quality of the footage is quite good."

Both Hammy and I have the Samsung SC-X cams for video. I have the 205, Hammy has the 300. They come with the external "helmet-cam" lens, which is quite versatile. We messed about a little bit seeing what other "cams" we could come up with. "Boot-cam", handlebar-cam", "pannier-cam", and "fender-cam" were just a few. The unit also operates as a regular digital handy-cam, when the external lens is not attached. They're completely digital and record to SD/MMC cards. No moving parts, and transferring footage to a computer after the trip takes seconds. It has a few other features, like integrated MP3 player, still camera, and voice recorder, but they're really not all that helpful. The still cam is only so-so at best and doesn't have a flash, so indoors or low-light is no-good. You have to use the same input-output jack to listen to the MP3 player that the external lens uses, so you can only use one at a time (MP3's also take up valuble space for more video!!). The audio through the external lens is crap. At speed, the wind noise made anything else undecipherable. It's VERY small (about the size of a deck of cards), and very easy to operate. A good starter camera.

I looked at that camcorder when it first came out. I am impressed with the quality of the video through the external lens. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for letting me "ride" the Gray Creek Pass again. Something I learned mountain bike is "Where you look, there you go". :shock:Even more important when you're twisting a throttle. Glad you didn't come to any harm. :D

Thanks again for the "ride". And the camera info.

Great ride report!

My buddy and I did a very similar route in June 2007 but got rained on all day, every day. Really enjoyed seeing it in the sunshine.

Thanks for this.

No worries. If you have any more questions about the cams at all, feel free to fire me a PM.

Youtube was having problems with episode 1, so I had to pull it. The good news is that it gave me a chance to re-edit and tweak it a bit. I even managed to find an additional 2-mins. The new episode1 should be accessible here:

The bad news is that now it appears they are having the same problem with episode 5, so it has no audio. I will do my best to get it fixed.

Alright!!! It's that time of year again, and Hammy and I are into final prep for the Big Trip 2009!! In exactly one week from today, Hammy arrives in Alberta and we set off for the Pacific. We’ll definitely be filming again; in fact we really haven’t stopped filming from Big Trip 2008. I put together the following preview in anticipation of this year’s trip. Enjoy!!

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GCUS8w-jfjU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If embedding the video doesn't work, you can try this URL:

P.S. – Anyone who might be in the areas we’ll be visiting (Vancounver Island, Okanagan Valley, Kootenay region), and wants to meet up for beers/coffee/ride is welcome to PM me and we’ll try to set something up.
