The classic sound

I came of age in the last years of brit bike heaven, My bedroom walls were plastered with pics and stats of most of the brits in them days. What I loved best about them all was their sound. Soooo. I have this 650 Klr thumper that sounds like mush. I'd like to have a bit more throat without bustin the sound levels. Power increases do't matter ,Just give me a sound I like.

You could use a Supertrapp ISD2 Quiet series or, if you want it louder, a Race series. If that's not loud enough get a Jardine but your bikecould excede the 96dB sound level limit. A re-jet will be neededwith a Jardine.Re-jet might be needed withaSupertrapp depending on the number of baffles used. There are lots of otherexhausts but I'm only familiar with these two.

I've got a Supertrapp ISD2 Quiet series and I'm very happy with it. The bike has more bottom end, response is quicker, throttle is linear,it is somewhat louder (but not too loud) and it shaved nearly 2kgs from my bike.

If you're on a budget, you can drill the bafffles out of the stock muffler but, it doesn't make much difference.Doing so will remove the spark arrestor which makes you a forest fire hazard.

As for what gives you that "classic sound" depends on what you think.

So the 96db rule is for organized events? Can anyone tell me what the db level of a typical stock Klr is? I don't want loud ,I lilke the sound of the older bms and modern Urals, the Klr will never sound like that but I'd like to improve the putt-putt sound. Can anyone reccomend web sites that have sound clips of different systems.

Thanks

Hi Volcon thanks for the reply. Your pipe is one that sounds good and can be run at 93db. How many baffles do you use? How would you compare it to the stock setup? I'm not looking for more power and I don't want to rejet. I'd just like a bit more of the thumper sound.

I'm using 9 baffles now and the plug shows lean. I plan on increasing the jet a size or two and adjusting the mixture by changing the number of baffles. According to Supertrapp eight baffles is the same as stock which is a bit lean. So, seven baffles "should" be very close to correct mixture with all else being stock.

Replacing the stock exhaust will give you a bit more power as the stock pipe is very restrictive. The overall power increase is not great (only about a hp or two) but it occurs through out the whole power band. As a result, the bike has more bottom end, accellerates better and has a bit less engine braking.I should have done it a lot sooner than I did.

BTW I'm using a stock airbox andfilter. Carb needle has been shimmed, pilot mixture out 1-3/4 turns. Stock gearing. As I said earlier, I will be re-jetting.

The bike doesn't make that pup-pup-pup sound any more, it's now a much more serious soundingPUMP-PUMP-PUMP. I haven't checked the sound level
