Tire suggestions for KLR650

Had good mileage,(10,000 km on the rear, no tread left)on trailwings(aka deathwings) good on the street and in the rain, useless/tricky in slippery mud and deep loose gravel especially on the front. Did a lot of street commuting on them. Going to try the Maxxis 6006 front and rear next, was going to get Conti TKC 80's, but the Maxxis were such a good price couldn't resist givin em a try. Thinking of an Alaska trip and will definately get the Trailwings for that trip, good value and decent wear.

I second that. I'm running the Kenda's on my bike; love the rear not a big fan of the front. They claim it's a 80% off road 20% on road but I'd say it's more of a 60/40 split. I have about 2000 k on the rear and 1000 on the front and no real signs of wear. Price wise they're tough to beat; about $120-130 for the set.

I'm into the second set of K270's front and rear which are both very satisfactory. No complaints with either tire so I'll likely stay with the Kendas in future. They are decent on the road in wet and dry as well as having some traction off road which the heavy brute needs. (VBG)
One tire characteristic to consider is the ease of breaking/seating the bead because some tires can be a huge problem in that regard. This isn't important on a shop's tire machine but may be of interest when you have a flat way in the back country.....been there and the K270 rear is not too bad. I hear some others are very nasty!

WhenI came back from the Baja on my KLR , my tires were so worn I had to stop in Southern Oregon for some new ones. The shop there recommended the cheapest tires they had ... MAXXIS 6006. I liked the look of the tread patter, so I went for them.
Next day I broke the tires in driving sanely through Oregon, and ended up near the Columbia river for the night. When I woke up the next morning, there was 1/4" of frost on my bike, and it would NOT start. Had to call a tow truck for a boost ... nothing wrong with the starter or the battery,the 20/50W oil I had changed to for BAJA simply did not like the sub-SUB-zero weather. And neither did I.
Caught the weather report, and a sleet storm was on its way, andI was still in Oregon. Drove from the coast to Portland, first hour or so at about 30 KMPh, as there was all sorts of frozen water on the road. Frozen water? I think you Northerners call this ice, right? With a big soft bag on my luggage rack, with about 90 lbs of gear in it, handling with the KLR was somewaht less than ideal.
After 6 weeks in Baja, riding around with no jacket, this was a condiderable shock to me and the KLR. The MAXXIS tires, however, seemed to be doing ok. The ice thawed about 11:00 AM, a few miles out of Portland, andI stopped for gas ... and a weather update. Freezing rain and possible snow flurries were on the horizon.
So back on the KLR, petal to the metal, as fast as the little engine could chug... averaging an honest 100 MPH flat out most of the way from Portland to the Canuckistan border. Just as I cleared customs, the sky turned ugly... but I was on the Vancouver Island ferry just as the first sleet started to hit.
So, to sum up, I can recommend MAXXIS 6006 tires for the KLR. In fact, I like them so much, I special oredered them for my Dakar 650, even though the BMW shop had several way more expensive tires in stock. I think they are the best bang for the buck out there in an agressive street tire that is somewhat off roadable ...

I run Kenda 270 front & rear and am happy with them for the type of riding I do. They are a 50/50 tire and I find them a little looser and louder on pavement than the oem Dunlops.
Since you're looking for a more street oriented tire try the Avon Distanzia or Metzeler Tourance, the BMW guys swear by them for those big GS's.
