as far as the fuel problem; i'm probably going to pick up 2 little 2 liter fuel safe jugs that will give me over 100km more range and that are not that hard to stash and i found myself getting better economy off-road than on the street/highway on my xcountry
anyways good luck with the newbike and look forward to seeing you at the OCRA ride

Interesting performance at the dunes this past weekend. I thought it performed well for you, but it looked like a real handful. Well done, but I don't envy you the power to weight ratio. And what's with the fuel mileage & capacity?

I too was pretty happy with the performance of the X bike, like all bikes it is a compromise.I think the rider needs a little more talent:spl:. Fuel consumption was roughly 3.5 liters per hour in the sand (about the same as my lawnmower). I like all the torque, not much need to change gears, just point and twist. Climbing the big dunes were no problem for the X challenge, and the bike had no problem exceeding 100 KPH in the soft sand:hr:. I have some ideas about carrying extra fuel,4 litres would do the trick.
The suspension worked wonders compared to the DRZ, only I had a problem with the front end washing out on the woops. In fact three times. I am blaming it on the stock front tire,(couldn't be me) it seemed to always be packed with sand but we will have to see when I get it changed to a knobbie. I think the bike (me)could benefit froma steering dampener.
I had to pick the bike up four times on Saturday once on the low side of a very large dune, no problems and didn't take the fun out of the day.
I was thinking about gearing the bike down, but I will wait a little longer. The engine has lots of bottomend. You can only go so slow before you fall over.
In short, the bike worked fine in the dunes. So its time for a new set of knobbies, front fender, licence plate holder then off to Odessa for the next ride.

I got to try Tom's X Challenge in the dunes and while that's not my first choice of places to test drive a bike, I liked it a lot. It certainly has the power and maneuverability to get me up some hills that I just couldn't do with my DRZ400. I found the suspension a lot better than my DRZ, for example attempting those hills I would get my speed up and launch into the bottom. On my DR the suspension would make me feel like I was going to become part of the hill, on the X Challenge it felt like I had a lot more to go and I just "floated" up the hill. Looking forward to trying it again on some terrain that I'm used to, like gravel and single track.

The Nubie Ride
Finally got a set of knobs on this bike. Going with the Mitas C-17 Front and Dunlop 606 Rear
The C-17front tire has made a huge improvment of the off road abilities of this bike, no more wash outs. On the pavement the tire is a little twitchy. Really has made the front end feel lighter.
606 hooks up real nice off road, no suprises here. On the pavement it is a little squishy when entering turns at high speed. Lots of fun and predictable.
I know its not me but I am the guy taking the pictures. the X bike was right at home on this terain.
Would have prefered something with a stud for this kind of riding.
I messed around in the gravel pit for a while, but I have to be honest. I think the Huskys put on a better show.
The end of the day
I wish I could rid myself of my street bike backgound, whena bike is dirty I just have to clean it. Had a great day in the Snow Sun and Mud, didnt even fall over, mirror in tact.
So far the bike is doing everything I ask of it.:tup::tup:
Still I wish I had an extra 4 litres of fuel to get my range to about 300kms
This week Ian and myself are off to Rich's Custom Seats http://www.richscustomseats.com/index.aspin Seatle to get the seats redone.

The Nubie Ride

Some of you must be getting tired of me posting about my bike:mad3:, too bad I am going to carry on.
Todays story:ted:
Rich's Custom Seats in Seattle
Today Ian B and myself went to Rich'sto getthe X and Husky fitted with some custom seats. I have heard about getting acustom seat for many of my bikes over the years but the time Idecide about it, its too late in the season.
This year I told myselfno excuses, get it done
We arrived at Rich's at 9am, Ian making us late again:f:
Now the fun begins, as we were enjoying our coffee the guys removed our seats and just took the completely apart:shock:
Nowwith the seat apart Rich starts chopping away, still hehasn't asked us a question about what we want. He did mention that when he saw the first X challenge that he knew he would be making money of this BMW offering.:hr:
Modifications to the seat-pan required
Here the guys are adding the extra foam for the support a guy like me needs
I thoughtto add this photos as Rich was also doing aKingQueen seat for thisHarley at the same time
Rich does all the cutting of the seat. He spends a lot of time asking you about your riding and expectations. It is wonderful to listen to an expert.
As Rich builds your new saddle he will have you sit and test it when he is satisfied that he has got it to a point where he can ask you for more input. Here you can see Ian sitting on the seat and Rich is checking for the shape of Ian's seat to the saddle. This is a crucial step in the process and may take several sittings.
The whole time Rich is either talking about the work he is doing, Motorcycle stuff or current affairs.
The saddle is now ready for a test ride. another very important step. Rich will take your feedback then reshape the seat for ultimate comfort. For me it was two test rides to get it to feel right. I think without this input is would be near impossible to make a truly comfortable saddle.:ted:

We spent about five minutes discussing leather and the pros and cons of Vinyl.
We went with the leather.
A great experience, I haven't even taken this bike for a ride but just looking at this saddle I know its going to be comfortable
Arrived at 9 am left at 5 pm Expect to spend the day
I also want to thank the guys that work for Rich. They helped to unload the bikes, made sure we had what we needed then help to get the bike back on the truck when the job was done
