Tomcycles New Xchallenge BMW G650 2008 3 Years, 20k and counting

Its been six months since I have reported on how the X Challenge is doing
The bike has been running great, has just shy of 20,000 kms on the clock
Looks like I will be doing my third set of wheel bearings on the bike
Also I will have to check the rear suspension bearing because they squeak badly
I will be ordering a new set of rims when the riding season wraps up, the stock rims are dented pretty bad, hopefully I wont be pulled over for a vehicle inspection:shock:
The engine on this bike is great, does not burn a drop of oil.
I will also have to change the clutch plates out. possibly the clutch basket too. The clutch drags a lot when in neutral. Still grabs great. I am impressed with the life I have gotten so far from this clutch as I use it for my 1/2 gears on thetight sections.
Had to have the seat recovered, wore out the leather on the first one, so it looks like new again
My only disappoint is that BMW stopped making this bike:?for me it is the ultimate Dual Sport Bike. I can ride it on the highway at 140 KPH all day long and ride the tightest of trails you would find any DS bike on.

Forgot, the battery died too I understand this will be covered by warranty

Good stuff, Tom :clap:I think more than a few of us were surprised to see the bike dropped from BMW's model line-up. I could imagine BMW was concerned of cannibilised F series sales? The bike still looks great though, retaining a modern appearance. Other than a Husky TE610 or KTM 690 I dunno what else is out there for alternatives.

Hey Tom, just so you know, there is 2 plugs and you will want to get the tool to pull the wires. I got a cheap plastic one in the states. Too bad I won't be back in BC until March, so I can't lend you mine. I really like the E 09 Mitas on the back, I got from Gnarly Dave. I see the latest is the Dakar model, should be a good tire.

Hey Tom how can you tell us how great and dependable this bike is when you have do all the bearings and the rest of the stuff. My orange is not experiencing the same challenges and has close to the same number of K's.
I hope that these comments are not a hex for Baja.

When I get back from Baja the X Challenge will have been serving me for 3 years:spl: and will have over 22000 mainly off road Kms:shoot: In all this time the BMW has never let me down. This bike has completed every ride it has ever started:bliss:
Yup this bike has some quirky things about it, but it is second to non for reliability and handling on and off road.
Dropped the bike off at Pacific Motorsports http://www.pacificyamahabmw.com
for its final service and warranty work (3 year warranty, and I want to ride Orange why?) I thought I should have the valves adjusted one last time before we head to Baja. as far as warranty work I have just the keyswitch that stopped working and the turn signal switch that sticks sometimes.

I must note that Ian from Britania Composites http://www.britanniacomposites.com/ did a little work to bring the fairing back into shape, with all the hard riding that was done since the fairing was installed the headlight mount was loose, and that was a quick and simple permenent fix, he also intalled the new decal kit for me all at no charge
Note the cool front mirror, havent used it yet but it is strong and very nice build quality

Another good view of the new mirror. I also mounted my Garmin directly to the dash with a powerlet Plug and adapter, this is a very nice clean setup for the gps I will still mount the little power conversion peice to the dash with some velcro. Go ahead and trash that crappy cigarette lighter plug

Along with the new chain and sprockets nice set of new tires. I have dropped this bike more that I would like to admit, never broke the case or brake lever, cant say that about the shifter lever.

I get about 180 -200 kms to the stock tank and the rotopax gets me another 100 kms
The rotopax holds 5 litres but generally when I dump that into the tank I start riding much easier:cross: It works really easy making the mount it took me only about a half hour and some junk in the shop , it ended up working so go I never changed anything and kept using the simple mount I made. The tank never gets in the way even on the hardest of trails. It also has survived some hard falls. Only thing I dont like is the delivery spout, it always seems to leak, but in the middle of Baja I am just happy to have the gas:woohoo:
