What I have been told is Keihin charges $52K US to design a fuel map that passes emissions testing.  There will be an FS570 and FE570 street legal in NA next year so they got 2 bikes homologated for the price of 1 if you know what I mean.  They would have to spend another $104K to get the 390 and 450 mapped.  With such a low volume of units, it is not cost effective.

That is a start, but with 3 provinces and a few states no longer allowing converted bikes I am sure they will be converted in the next few years.

You can always remove the street gear if you don't want it, but it is going to be impossible to add it. That is one way that they could look at it and market it.

The problem is that most states allow conversions. I am very good friends with a big KTM dealer in Michigan and he only orders 1 or 2 EXCs a year compared to 30+ XCWs as MI is a very easy state to do a conversion.

Canada is such a small market, in the big picture, no company really cares about us. Sad, but true.

Yes, but I am sure they will stop with conversions soon. I read somewhere that Nevada is no longer allowing them and I am sure that California and the other 5 or so "green" states will quit soon too.

I would really like the 390, but a 250 with a 310 cylinder would be nice too.

I guess I will have to get a KTM450EXC...one day...maybe a nice guy around Kamloops will let me ride his this summer to test it out. ;)

I don't think it does, but no where on the bike or any of the paperwork that I have says off road use only. I was going to buy a 530EXCR and the shop asked me if I wanted a insured FE570 and I said sure. So I bought it, insured it the same day I got it.

That’s the unfortunate part no compliance label = technically not legal (and why I picked up450EXC-R and got rid of my 400EXC) There was nothing wrong with the 400 other than it did not have a sticker. I too have been tempted by the 570 from the moment Ifirst saw it.

Unfortunately the fact it was sold to you that way and is currentlyplated does not preclude ICBC @ some point from pulling plates, pulling people in for inspection to check for decals etc etc.

Undoubtedly if they chose to do so they will end up with a fight on their hands..but legally if the bikes were never intended to be road legal where does one stand ( only in terms of their importation and Transport Canada certification, not that they are mechanically unsafe)

I have a feeling at some pointmany amongus are going to get stuck owning a very nice but expensive dirt only machine.

The NVIS will indicate if it is a motorcycle (M/C) or a RUM. The Compliance Label on the bike will also show if it is a motorcycle (M/C) or a RUM

on the back fender and left side coverof your 570, there is a sticker that says "closed course competition only" on it....if it's not there the dealer removed it/them. There is also two stickers on either side of your frame, right up at the front just behind your triple clamps. The one on the left (clutch)will have a bunch of info on it. It says nothing about RUM etc, however the sticker on the right side of the bike says closed course competition only....once again unless it's been removed. Someone could remove the top part of the sticker cause that wording is right at the top....but it is a RUM bike however. I am certain of this because I'm in a Berg dealer all the time looking at them...or should I say drooling:D

Oh well, as of right now I have the bike insured for riding on the road. And if down the road ICBC doesn't allow me to renew my insurance I'll deal with it then. I bought the bike for a really good deal and if I couldn't dual sport it I would probably still keep it or trade it in on a 530EXC. For now I'm one happy camper!

The International Motorsports sales guy today at the m/c show swore to me that the 2010 FE nvis says Motorcycle and, with the addition of the factory harness, lights, hornand DOT tires, they are licensing them without issue. He claims $400 for the KTM parts to make it street legal (not including tires) and no inspection required.

His words: 'Not a RUM, Not a RUM, Not a RUM'.

Seems like a lot of differing information out there. :(

Malachi, if you have them there... what does the nvis say? Let's get this sorted out.

I'm going there tomorrow morning, I'll let you know.

International is just trying to sell bikes. It don't matter what the NVIS says, if you get forced to have an inspection, you need to have a Canadian compliance decal. Husabergs (as of yet) do not have them on any model sold in NA. With the NVIS you get registered without inspection and may have a lifetime of hassle-free dualsporting- just don't get inspected!

ps- yes the husaberg nvis says motorcycle. so does (or at least did) Honda dirtbikes.

Well, all I know is that I'm loving my plated FE570. But I guess ignorance is bliss. I guess as long as I don't give someone a reason to make me get the bike inspected I'll be ok.
