Dorky,
I had an in depth conversation with a staff member at the KTM/Husaberg Canada booth. I asked him if the FE (any displacement) was insurable and his answer was "I wish". He went on to tell me that there are very few enduro bikes street legal in Canada due to do with something about gas tanks. I can't remember specifics because I talked to a lot of people at the show & it's all a bit of a blur. He said KTM paid to have the 450/530 done (huge $$$) & that's all. He mentioned that he was aware that Husky paid to have their TE line cleared for the road too, but hadn't heard of any other 'similar' bikes coming thru the 'street legal' pipe. He did say that Husaberg is rumoured to be making the 2011 FE570 street legal for North America but so far it's only that, a rumour, & will be heavily influenced by their 2010 sales & the economy in general.
A gentleman in the Kawasaki booth came over & talked to me when he saw I was checking out the KLX450. As usual, I asked if it can be plated (I always ask that question *LOL*). He said 'technically' no. I asked if he was sure & he said he most certainly was because he also does inspections for ICBC. He said ICBC is well aware of RUM bikes on the road. Basically, the "problem" is happening at the insurance agent level. I asked him to elaborate & he says that if you walk into an insurance shop & hand over the reggie for a KX450 they have no idea what it is *specifically*, so they basically plate it as if it were a street bike. To be fair, he said ICBC doesn't equip agencies with the proper data to differentiate a KX from a ZX, but that's about to change. So I asked him what the deal was with guys already plated. He goes on to tell me that it makes no difference if you managed to get your non-compliant bike plated. ICBC has recently completed some new VIN checking system but it's not implemented in their system yet. When it goes online they will know if you're crusing around with a plate on your [insert RUM bike here}. Then ICBC will send you a letter to go for an inspection. So I says "that's fine, as long as everything is in order (lights, horn, etc) there should be no problem, right?" nope! Here's the kicker: if your bike doesn't have a proper (i.e., "motorcycle) compliance sticker then they cannot & will not inspect it. And that's when you'll be calling the wife to come pick up the bike to truck it home. I asked about bikes that were plated before the new (Sep 14/09) memo went out but he was unwilling (not unable) to talk about that.
Food for thought, I guess.
