Two-stroke DRZ?

BAD NEWS...:mad3:

My bike has been using a little more oil than I'd like, and a failedcam chain guide fragment (no engine damage)caused the trans to be stuck in 3rd or 4th...

Teardown to head-off stage (to replace guide) revealed severe carbon buildup on valves and in the combustion chamber, and a worn cylinder bore, almost all the crosshatching is gone and you can see the rings have actuallyy worn grooves in the bore where they stop at the top and bottom of the stroke. Also the piston shows signs of wear, but not scoring, just shiny skirt.

Haven't measured anything yet but it looks like a ball hone and ring job won't fix it,I think it needsreplating and a new piston/rings.

Anyone have any good ideas about the cheapest way of getting this done?

http://www.mongoosemachine.com replates cylinders and they are close too. anyone had any experience with these guys? Turnaround times?

Long shot but does anyone have a lightly used piston/cylinder they may have removed to do a big bore conversion? I'd be interested in that option too.

Haven't dealt with mongoose recently , but I recall from the 80's(Port Moody location), it was the preferred choice for machining etc. Never heard nothing but good from friends who have used them, fwiw.

Mongoose is good enough to be recognized as a Yamaha approved service provider. They replate cylinders for bikes, snowmobiles, outboards etc. I have several friends who have had cylinder rechromes and they were perfect. I always see Jay for engine machining needs and I buy Wiseco pistons, All Balls wheel bearing and seal kits, gasket sets etc. from him and have always had excellent results. I highly recommend them. He can do a great valve grind service for your Suzuki too.

why not just bore to a 385cc wiesco, that's what i did and i love it. a whole different bike now. you can find them on ebay for around 100 and a bore job isn't much.

Forgot that there are other displacement DRZ's, mine is a 400 andhas the Nikasil coating, so boring means replating afterward, still trying to find out what mongoosecharges for a that. Was yours a DR 350?

Anyone hada replatedone recently?

Sounds like Mongoose has a good reputation, just hope they are affordable, found a Cylinder Works 434cc (94mm piston)complete kit on Ebay for $400 plus shipping, has a new cylinder, gaskets, piston, rings, pin, and clips. Might end up going that route if the replate and standard bore parts are more.

What a great excuse, "But Honey, the stock parts are more expensive..."

Hi Tom, Bummer about your engine...

I've dealt with Mongoose quite a bit and haven't had a problem with them yet....

If I remember right they charge close to $300 for a replate job so you may be better off buying that kit for $400.....

Just got off the phone with Mongoose, Dave, andtheyDO charge $300 plus taxes for a replate, so I just have to get the parts to the Ron at Hardy Bay Machine (the best around here) for measurement to confirm my suspicions before ordering up the kit.

434 cc will probably need a rejet, have the carb apart now, and it was already lean on the mainjet for my (lack of) altitude. Might be time to do thefamous3X3 mod if that the case.

Brian said you guys had a good ride after a few adjustments to chain tension and oil level on a certain KLR? Agent 007 would be proud, apparently. No need to worry about the bugs.

Thanks for the offer, but I've already had my cylinder ball honed and ordered the required new parts from the TT store, and a stock crank fromEddie at Sisneros Speed Works. The aim is to keep the bike as stock as possible for now, but maybe do the 3X3 mod while everything is apart.

That being said, how much are you asking for the BB kit?

Just a sitrep, all the new parts are now sitting undermy bench waiting on just one step, flywheel (rotor) removal, which, of course, requires an oddballspecial tool that I don't happen to have, so I'm waiting for the machinist to fab one, too cheap to lay out the $80 for a puller I'll use once anyway. The crankcase has been opened up andso far all looks good. Hope to be back on the road before the snow flies...

Sure is a downer walking into the workshop and seeing the Z with no motor in her.
The way things have been around here latelythe only rides would be to and from work anyway, just not enough time and the days keep getting shorter...
