Warning !! – Air Filter wet ?

I picked a 04-KLR in January with 11000 k’s.

It started to smoke blue at about 14000. I took it apart and I discover that I have to rebuild the "top end" with an oversize piston and rings.:mad3:

I trace the problem to the AIR FILTER. :mad3:

Apparently was NOT WETat the time of purchase and slowly (I mean fast) eat my cylinder:mad3:

Guy… Check you AIR filter before a long trip…It will improve the life of any bike.:tup:

Hi Victor,

Did you buy the bike from a dealer? If you only have put about 3000 km on it, you should discuss this with the dealer's service manager and/or the dealer principal. If they are unwilling to help there might be some recourse through the dealer association through arbitration or if there is cause, small claims court.

3000 km with an unoiled airfilter certainly doesn't wear out an engine unless it is all in a Sahara sandstorm.

I bought the bike from “George” (an old felo that always ride with his wife in the back)

Kenco told me that he really take care of the bike, oil regularly, but Kenco agrees that he probably forgot to check air filter for the 2 years he got it, and "maybe" SG never oil the filter in the first place. (Kenco has some else with the same problem from the same dialer)

The engine ware and the dryness of the filter make sense. Any suggestion ?

I would have to agree with Dirtybill, sounds like something else may be at fault. I made a mess out of my DR650 piston with a improperly mounted K&N filter (my fault)but that was after 5000 kms of the Baja and the bike had over 30000 kms on the ticker. And that was just smoke when I started the bike.
