What I did Apr. 20

Hey guys,

Working retail means that the best work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, leaving me with Sundays and Mondays open. I love having Mondays off, especially now as the weather gets better, since it gives me a chance to venture offroad without all the weekend traffic.

I had wanted to check out the Vedder/Chilliwack River valley area some more, seeing how many connections I could make on the dirt and over mountains.

I started the day off with the plan to find out if a person could get over Vedder Mountain/Majuba Hill. At first, I tried from the West side, by carrying as far east as I could on Majuba Hill Rd. It turned into a steep gravelly switchback road, and at the top was a house with dogs and an old bridge leading into overgrown brush.

As far up as I got on Majuba Hill Rd. Looking West towards Abbotsford

Ol' girl ready for more

Getting no love from Majuba Hill Rd, I headed over to the Cultus side, up Parmenter Rd, and onto the FSR. I spent a fair amount of time up here and will have to go back. There are all kinds of trails and roads up there that need explorin'. As I approached a lookout, I decided to do one of those cool "lock up the rear wheel and skid sideways to a stop" things. I carried a little bit too far sideways and highsided myself.. Great..

Slightly warm, but quite content.

I decided, over a sushi lunch in Chilliwack, that the day was young and I wanted to check out the Ryder Lake area to see if I could find the way over to the Chilliwack River Valley. After attacking the paved twisties on the way up, I came to this open field, flew by, then turned around to snap a shot.

I carried on to Chilliwack Bench FSR, which connects nicely to the Chilliwack River valley. I had found another pass.

Finally, I did the little trail between Tamihi and Sleepy Hollow. They've really blocked off the gates at both ends. The Tamihi end still has the creek crossing bypass, and the Sleepy Hollow end has an offshoot into the ditch on the left side of this pic.

All in all, a good day, and now I know that a person can make it almost completely on dirt from Yarrow to Ryder Lake. Very cool.

Nice report! Was there any snow left on the main road on Vedder Mountain? I was up there a 10 days ago and got turned around by snow.

I didn't find any snow anywhere. I would wager to say Vedder is clear.

Hi Travis

Yes, you can go over Vedder Mtn into Cultas. With the trail you took from Majuba Hill road you were pretty close to going the right way. You have to take a pretty sketchy single track trail thru the bushes. Just when you think the trail goes no where it will open up and turn into a logging road. Turn left on the logging road and that takes you down to the main road that takes you right into Cultas.

I've done it a couple of times so I know it's there. The first time I did it I found the trail by accident. The second time I did it (a couple of weeks later) I went down a few wrong trails until I "accidentaly" found the right one again. :)

Looks like you had a nice day anyway.
