So are there any dual sports for the 2008 and 2009 years that are legal without question? I guess I am asking if any are designated on the VIN plate as "Motorcycle" and not as "off road" or "RUM".

I am looking to upgrade early next year and don't want to buy a bike and then find out that the province is going to pull my registration.

If the compliance label states only "motorcycle" or "M/C" you are okay. If it says "restricted use motorcycle”, "competition use only", etc it is not a dual sport. If there is a bike you are interested in check the label. I looked at a Husky TE510 a few weeks ago, I thought it was a "dirt bike" until I looked at the label and saw that it was a “motorcycle”. Keep looking, you might be surprised and find something you like.

Instead of complaining about what the government should be doing, how about if we do something ourselves. Write to all the manufactures of motorcycles requesting a dirt worthy dual-sport. Get all your friends to write. Don’t tell me it is a waste of time. If you have the time to comment on a forum, you have time to write to a manufacture. Support KTM, they are willing to take the steps needed to get certified. They deserve our support. If we quit buying Honda, Suzuki, etc and bought KTM instead eventually the others would come on board.

Of course it is easier to take the easy way out and just keep replying to this post that it is to try to influence the manufactures to provide the bike that we all want, but that is human nature, isn’t it.;)

I spent twenty plus years in the motorcycle industry andfrom my experience, convincing motorcycle manufacturers to alter their marketing plans and model offeringsis a challenge and rather futile. Even as dealers, there was very little heed paid to our suggestions and requests. Canada comprises such a small segment of most factories production that often we may be more of a nuisance factor than anything especially when it comes to motorcycles that have limited sales potential or small market appeal.

The return on investment in DOT testing can only be achieved through significant sales. Fortunately, many vehicles that are made compliant for theUS market can qualify with minor modifications for the Canada market. Examples being the legal KTM's and the current offerings from Japan, but I don't think you will ever see aHusky, TM, Husaberg, Sherco, Beta, Derbi or any othercool "enduro" that is homologate in Europe become DOT certified because the small importers simply cannot afford testing.Canadian riders willhavefew options other than searching for motorcycles with the motorcycle designation on the tag or NVIS form and going through inspection orriding an orange bike or some Japanese manufacturer's idea of a dual sport bike.

What makes many of us furious iswhy so manyhome brew choppers, hot-rods, monster trucks and all sorts of questionable vehiclesseem to have found loopholes to get plates. Go figure, is it because choppers, hot-rods and jacked up 4X4's are part of our culture and history? It allseems rather perplexing to me.

If you want to increase the number and variety of DOT approved dirt bikes in Canada, support the Canadian distributorswho lay their cash on the line to import the bikes. If they become successful enough maybe one day they will be able to afford to have bikes tested and approved like KTM, BMWand the Japanese brands.

Personally, I thing writing a letter to most manufacturersis, for the most part, a waste of time. Sorry to be so long winded.

I just looked on the label of my W.R. and it says "restricted use only" If I get my plate taken away I will be looking to Pacific B.M.W. to step up to the plate.

Well, if a guy can build a "custom chopper", from the ground up and get it registered, maybe DS's instead of "dual sporting" a bike should change their description. I don't think there's any rule says a "chopper" has to have a v-twin engine or any other specified part, apparently.

Start with a fewugly temporary tattoos, let your beard grow for a week or so, go to the pawn shop and buy the grubiest BL jacket you can find, and then...

Bolt your garden ornamental gate to your luggage rack, install some ape-hangers, borrow a beany and ride'r in for inspection, making sure you describe it as a "custom chopper". Everyone knowsthat work on a chopper is never done and the "look" might get changedas time goes on.

Oh, You shouldtorchthe stupid label, and removing all your exhaust system after the header pipeshould help too.;)

sparkle-thar's funny, but sadly probably a lot closer to the truth than you may have planned. how some of those choppers stay upright in a forward direction is almost as big a mystry,as how they got a licience plate on the thing!

i like tall bars, but i never thought about a set of triple chrome ape hangers!where can a guy buy a offroad worthy beanie these days?

Your options are limited. KTM- 450 and 530 exc's

Honda- CRF230L, XR650L

Kawasaki- KLX250S, KLR650,

Suzuki- DRZ400S

Yamaha- XT225,WR250R

BMW 450X, X-challenge

There might be a few models I missed, but the list is pretty short. FYI, the Husky TE line (450,510,610)in NOT street-legal in Canada from the factory. It is in the states, but up heretheir still a "dirt bike" and need a provincial inspection.

As a side note, does the NVIS form count for anything? Or just the intended use statement on the VIN? I know for years the Honda CRF250/450X didn't specify "off-road motorcyle" on the NVIS, so many a owner got them licensed and insured brand new, without any inspection.

The NVIS on my 03 Husa 400 said 'motorcycle'. That's all that ICBC wanted to see. (That was this year)

Well it took me calling 6 different people, as gov. bounces you from one idiot to the next, but after 2 days, and many calls, i got to talk to someone smarter than a rock finally.

Basically, it should be no issue if your bikes insured now, unless you change it dramatically.

Michael Pendergast, from DOT in Ottawa and I had a good chat today.

He rides himself, and is of the opinion the gov. would not force a bike off the road, as then all cars, trucks bikes etc. with any mod would be gone to.

If you get a bike inspected, take pics of it at the inspection facility if your really worried he said.

They will show the current status of lighting etc if your bikes legality is ever challenged.

He said they have very few issues with DS bikes, that the biggest infractions are actually street bikes, modified so the lights are now basically impossible to see...he used the example of after market undertail on crotch rockets.

Also he mentioned that if the gov went that far as to take youtr bike off the road, then what next, any car with a ski rack, or after market wheels, unless the car was reinspected.

He summed it up like this....keep your plate and lights clean and visible, run DOT tires, and do not ride like a hooligan on the road doing wheelies etc. and you most likely will ride for the next 30 years and be left completely alone.

Thanks Michael:hb:

Welcome guys.

I just wanted to know if my bikes were going to get yanked off the road , and many others bikes....That would not seem fair to me, if we all have bikes we have ridden for years on the roads, and suddenly those same bikes or very similar are considered illegal.

If we have legal lighting, tires, etc. seemed weird to single us out, and ban us from the roads.

Have you seen the bozos in motorhomes, and moms in their minivans applying makeup and yelling at the kids as they drive.....they are a lot more dangerous than we are in my opinion.

I do wish they would start ticketing cagers that hog the left lane, never signal, run stop signs, try and run us bikers over, just change lanes without ever checking for traffic, tailgate you on the bike 3 feet off the rear fender, etc.

That alone would keep them all more than busy writing tickets, and give the gov. lots of revenue.

Also...I bet I could get My 1975 Kx 400 road legal,if I had the time......:)

if you did it like the ''chopper and street rod guys''it would be a ''u-build'' where its assigned its own serial number.then it has nothing to do with ''compliance decals''. do itthat wayand nobody will ever bedeeming it illegal down the road
