Where to? Bella Coola?

Looks as if I'll have a couple of weeks off - starting week of 5th July...but can't decide where to go! Trip would be mostly camping.

One thought is to wander down Hwy16/97 (with detours where possible) and go look at Bella Coola and explore there for a couple days before wandering back home. I know it's a lot of blacktop - but there looks like there are some FSR type roads that could link between the main towns (Hwy 97 - south of PG?)

Anyone got any thoughts or other suggestions?
Not specifically looking for anyone to ride with but .....

Yes......a great area. Turn north at Pavilion and go through Dog Creek, Gang Ranch and come out on highway 20.

Thanks ...looks well posted ...maybe I could trundle around there for a day as well...
How's the camping for Bears & other critters?

When I was camping on the beach in Ken's last pic, I realized there was mounds of bear fur all around my tent, I thought it was black moss at first. Gang ranch side is a bear hunting area, saw several pickups there with the dogs mounted in some type of wooden box in the back of the pickup. I never treed my food like I was planning and no probs, but on the other hand almost every bear I saw was in a camping area. And never saw two large bears hanging out together before - is it dating season?

i'm heading down to Vancouver on the 6th will try and ride mostly gravel on this trip. From PG to Quesnel via the Blackwater. Quesnel to Williams lake river road, Williams lake through the gang ranch to Lynton and from there to Harrison.

Looks like I'll head South towards Bella Coola after a day two this side of PG. Will probably try the backroads from PG to Quesnel & Williams Lake and then see where I get to - Is the Blackwater Rd easy to find? Can't fix a specific date, so it's unlikely I could meet up.
Enjoy the run.

the blackwater road is easy to find. Just before you get to PG turn right on the road to West Lake and Continue straight south. It's paved for the first 25km or so and then turns into high grade gravel. Just after you pass by the blackwater river you make a left turn and stay on the main road until you end up in Quesnel. I have the gps track if you want it for the route i rode for van to PG.

Thanks....actually, I was looking at another (?) Blackwater Rd that heads South East a few kms East of Vanderhoof ...I think I could link them up to get to Quesnel.
I can probably get most of the way from Hazelton/Moricetown - Smithers - Houston - Vanderhoof - Quesnel - Williams Lk ...all on backroad...but there seem to be several gaps on the maps.
GPS? ..no, I just follow my nose! ...if you have it "on a map" you could post here or P.M. me?

...I went off for 9 days, more of a roadie trip than DS stuff but managed a few side trips up some trails. Bella Coola has always been a spot I wanted to visit ..it's just so far to get to!

I set off to Takysie Lake south of Burns Lake for a couple of days wandering around the trails. Then via backroad to Vanderhoof & PG. I took the Blackwater to Baldy Hughes but....when I hit the FSR there were two things (1) there were logging trucks every few minutes and (2) as noted in a post above, the road is newly graded and after only a few kms of marbles I gave up and backtracked :mad:
Finally, I get to Williams Lake, Hwy20 and Fraser River - beautiful riding country! Heading West the country changes from the deep gorges to the high plateau - ranchland and miles and miles of beetle kill forest.
The road is asphalt to Anahim and then about 40 miles of good dirt all the way down "The Hill" (which is worth doing a couple of times just for the fun)....yes it is very steep with scary drop-offs in places but the road surface was good (it was also hot & dry).
Once at the valley floor the 30 mile run to Bella Coola was on gorgeous twisty asphalt.
I spent a couple of days in the valley - checked out a couple of trails ...but it was HOT (37C) so much of the time was spent at the riverside.

The ride up the hill was just as good but it was a long haul back to Williams Lake. The next diversion was to Fort St.James north of Vanderhoof - but didn't explore too much as the next day was to Fort Babine north of Granisle / Smithers ...lots of good FSR

Overall it was a great trip - some gorgeous country (sure, the sunshine helps!) ...the final run down The Hill and into Bella Coola Valley made it worthwhile. I'd like to explore the area south of Williams Lake sometime

Bike: no problems - did between 450-550 kms per day when travelling - overall 3296 kms (2048 miles). The TKC80 rear has worn to about half (at centre) after ~3700kms

Clicking the photo below should open my gallery ...sorry not many "DS" photos - mostly pretty pictures:rolleyes:

There's some sweet exploring to be done down there for sure. And yes there is a Blackwater Road at the top of the hill in Vanderfoot you can take to Quesnel.

Sounds like you had a good time. Bella Coola is still one of my favorite areas to visit.

i just got back from a camping/fishing trip in the Chilcotin.I drove thru from Tatla lake to Chilko lake the road was pretty gnarly for a truck with camper but i think this would be a nice way to go on a dualsport, the bugs were hungry the scenary awesome and the fishing excellent in Tsuniah lake.

Fantastic pictures. It has been awhile since I have been in that part of the world. Going back there on my bike is definitely on my to do list.

I agree there's lots more to see down there. Howver, I get a little "nervous" wandering too far off the main tracks on my own!

glad the trip went well, to bad about the blackwater and the truck traffic but you must have hit one of the few days that they were hauling out of there.

alphajory, if you could post your route for the Blackwater - Harrison, I would be very interested in that. Even if it is not a GPS route, but well directed directions that I can plot on Google Earth and a map, ect would be wonderful. Thanks for helping out.

Nice avatar as well :)

Great ride Kitimat. I am thinking of something like this for next year as I have a buddy in AB that just got licensed up and bought a 09 KLR.

Alexis creek to gang ranch.jpglyton to harrison.jpg

here at the routes from Williams lake to Harrison.there are two routes that you can take the one through Gang Ranch to Alexis creek and the other through dog creek. The road down the power lines from Lytton to Boston Bar was a interesting ride but not sure that i would do it again. This piece took a couple of hours to ride and the scenery wasn't much different than that of the hyway. On the road from Boston Bar to Harrison there are a couple of same slides across the road but other than that it was an easy go with great scenery. But by far the most favorite part of the ride was through to the Gang ranch.

I have the ride in gpx format (Garmin) if you want them just can't figure out how to attach them here.

next weeks ride is through Carpenter lake and Pemberton the route down will have to depend on the fires. Maybe Barkerville to Likley and across.
