Which bike should I buy?

I assume peoples aversion to 08+ ( I have one) is the redesign of the motor. A problem KTM has "supposedly" fixed with the 2010 and up models. It would seem many have had a seal fail between the seperate engine and transmission oils ( a new feature of the RC4/RF4/XC4 engine series. ( the old RFS series had common oil).

Ends up being a pain to change, and you end up with lots of one oil and none of the other..both being bad

I've only owned one dualsport, and ridden three.


It's old and slow, but not too heavy and exceeds MY performance in all ways. At least, right now it does.

Get something and get out there, and when you figure out what you like doing, go in the direction that suits you.

I ride an '85 XL600R and have a blast each and every time I get on it...
Now if only it had electric start.

I think any bike will be fun, especially when you don't ownone. I started back into riding 5 years ago on an later 80's XL250...was good enough. It was an R not L so no plates.

I'd riden enough things, bike, small, fast, slow, old etc..that I decided to move up to the power and ability of the euro bikes ( oddley enough I have a fondness for AWD 6 spd 400 hp euro saloon cars as well)

The Euro bikes don't pull as hard as the japanese bikes do ( if you are looking violent snap) I find the power more refined, linear...like it just starts pulling from idle and goes and goes. I happen to like my orange tractor.

The price of andmision was a bit higher, but with reg oil changes, and the occasional valve check, I certainly had nothing but ordinary mainteneance on my first KTM ( which I got used from a racing team store in AB)..it had been ridden hard and put away wet...yet still served me well the next 20k. Which for and old RFS is pretty good. I only got an 08 this year due to the new rules about RUM. Even that I got used...no way i'm taking the hit on new.

In the end, get someting you'll enjoy and have run riding. Some are better than others, but something is better than nothing!
