Hey gang, fairly new here, would like to start making it out some these rides and noticed its always Church or Tamahi. Why does no on ever ride vedder? Is one area better suited for dual sports?
Thanks,
Wrik

Lots of guys ride Vedder, Im guessing they just dont post about it? There is a bunch of us here that do spend most our time at Tamihi, its newer and growing all the time. Some of the others should chime in and talk more about Vedder. There is also Chipmunk Creek up the road from these two areas, but its riding starts at the 1500 foot level and goes up from there so not much riding when its cold out.

Both Vedder and Chipmunk are long time established riding areas, lots of gnarly trails, sometimes not what a dual sport rider may be looking for.

Pick your area and try it out.

Okay.....so if you're calling it gnarly......just how impossible is it?!?!

Vedder is indeed a popular & excellent riding area. Different from Church/Tamahi; different from Chipmunk.

My experience is that the individual trails are longer at Vedder. So if I'm struggling / having a tough time, I know I'll be stuck with it for several minutes. An equally challenging experience at Church will 'release me' to a FSR much sooner.

Vedder has alot of trail users compared to Church. Decent cooperation among cyclists, hikers, equestrian, ATV & dirtbikes... but still busy with a bit of conflict. Church has very few non-motorized users, and the trails are less well known (because we're the ones that opened / maintain them).

Chipmunk is another story altogether... those GVMC-maintained trails always hand me my ass.

The Church/Tamihi trails are more conducive to dualsporting, offering trails that 'flow', decent loops and through-routes utilizing FSRs. Since we lead major events there at least 2x yearly, we're guilty of spending most of our time there - maintaining, marking & opening trails.

Enjoy!

I have ridden Vedder for many years. The place use to be less used and not quite so hammered out. Don't get me wrong, the riding there is awesome.
There is really no easy trails at Vedder. Even the easiest stuff has sections or nasty in it, and for the most part once you get into it there is no easy way out.
Unless you are a dam good rider it is no place for a dual sport bike IMHO

Vedders got some great dual sport trails, aka quad trails. Lots of them of differing ability's. Lots of them are old eroded roads. We did a ride a few months back where we started at Tamahi and was not having a ton of fun due to very muddy trails and a bald back tire on my ride, so we just went over to Vedder and found the traction much better. Ended up way over on the west side of the mountain past the duck farm and took some very scenic asphalt back to Tamahi (Vance road). What a great riding area the Wack is with all the choices. Please stay off the non motorized trails on Vedder. Theres lots of signage with trail difficulty ratings. If you look online I think there are some maps.

Thanks Guy's, I live in Yarrow and spent 2 days up on Vedder since this post. First day was hard not knowing what was around the next corner or if the climb would ever end LOL! The second trip went better as I had an idea of what was coming up and knew the ''lines'' I should be riding. I come from a motocross background but not single track through the rain forest, and am finding it very addicting. I have a feeling it will take a looong time to figure out all the trails up there! Put 111km on the first day doing trails? crazy! I plan on joining some of your weekend rides to hopefully learn a thing or two ;) after all Vedder Mountain grill is 2 blocks from the house. Hope to see you all out there soon.
