I would like to know if anyone can let me know as of March 30th 08 if the road from Woss to Gold river is ridable? I noticed this "logging road" in my Van Isl back roads map. & is it doable on a Vstrom 1000? Any help/suggestions are appretiated.

Cheers!

I don't know if it is currently open but it was a couple of years ago. It is a mainline FSR and certainly doable on a VStrom or GS. We were on KLRs and it sees a fair bit of car traffic, not only trucks. Watch out for the off highway trucks in the corners! It is a nice ride.

It was closed last August when I went through after spring washouts. Normally is always open...a perfect V-Strom road. Check Timberwest for road info. Also, IslandHopper and BajaMan will know more seeing they live nearby.

Longway... We just tried to go thru there today and had to turn back due to heavy snow on the road.... You get about 8 or 10 K past gold river and thats it.... It was a superb ride thru Strathcona park though but very cold for this time of year....

I'm actuall planning tp start in Woss & head to Gold River. Here's a thought, where do I find the road when I get to Woss?

Cross the big bridge over the Nimpkish in Woss and turn hard left onto Nimpkish River MN..... Stay on this for a long ways, cross the Sebahal {outlet from Vernon lake}River bridge and go past Vernon lake road intersection to the next T intersection {to far and youll be at the RR reload} and turn right this will take you 20 or 30 KM towards Gold River untill the snow stops your progress......

You could then turn back and go past the RR reload and out to HWY 19 at the mount Cain/Schoen lake park turnoff....

Is this road (Gold River to Woss) open? I live in Alberta but I'll be riding on the island next week and I was thinking of doing it.

Hey Dave WS,

I never ended up riding the road yet but the weather has been very good here lately so... probably fine. There must be a way of checking the conditions. One guy said check the Timberwest site.

My main concern is that Timberwest has closed the road to public use. Their web site indicates most of their roads are closed.

Dave
See my posts regarding a dinged rim in BMW section. We went through the Woss road a month ago. Very potholly, but open and worth travelling.

Timberwest doesn't have operations in the area, Western forest products works on that turf....

I don't recall seeing the Woss /GR road closed due to fire hazard in the past but have seen other areas shut down due to dry conditions... Most of that road is cloaked in greenery and shade so I would venture a guess that it will remain open...

I'll be out there sometime on Sunday so I can give you a report...

Thanks for answering my questions. I rode from Gold River to Woss on June 17. I also rode logging roads from west of Woss to Port Alice. Both routes were very enjoyable and scenic.
