XL600R Stator? Coil?

1984 XL600R

Got the bike back on the road yesterday, started first kick in the morning without any trouble.

I recommended to my brother that he readjust the carbs to spec as the bike had been having trouble with hot starts. Rechecked the idle and pilot screws, the pilot was completely bottomed out so reset that. Ran a little richer but started easier. One thing to note is there is a spacer on the carbs to the head.

Bike was running great (albeit a bit rich), then cough, die, no start. Even after trying to towstart it, clear the carbs, etc, still wouldn't run on its own. It would cough over and that was it.

Checked the petcock, flows nicely in both reserve and run.

Checked the plug, was a little black, but the gap was ok, cleaned it up and scrubbed the electrode.

Tried kicking it with the plug against the head, I couldn't see any spark (yet it sputters).

Checked the Coil
primary resistance: .5 ohms
secondary: 8800 ohms

Checked the Stator
exciter: 396-500 ohms
charger: 1.6-2.1 ohms
lighting: 1.0 ohms

Methinks the stator is done, thoughts?

Anyone have a spare we could buy/borrow before Sunday?

Hi WCR:
Just a few comments.

Whenever my bike just stops running, 99% of the time I can trace it back to the last thing I buggered with.....

Your coil numbers look okay, and your magneto winding resistance looks okay too. And the fact the bike sputters means there must be some kind of ignition present.

Many older bikes make a very weak spark at cranking RPM.... hard to see in any kind of light. It might be possible (in fact probable if it sputters) that a spark is present and the ignition is okay.
I'd recheck that carb before I replaced a stator that's been running fine for 26 years......

Stators all seem to be weak on XL's after so many years of use.

I can't comment on your resistance readings, but the Ricky Stator in mine makes a nice spark even when kicking it over. The spacer between the carb and head is OEM, one on mine as well.

Check your carbs first. As Sparkle said, the last thing you screwed with is the first thing to re-check.
Then I'd look at ignition stuff. Stator, coils, CDI.

The new stator in mine took it from a complete pig to start to an easy first kick hot, and 2-3 cold once primed.
