"OK Ladies and Gentlemen, here we go (insert drum roll here)

The preliminary plans so far:

Afternoon of Friday, August 13

Meet at Tyee Lake Campground in Telkwa. I have reserved the group site. This is an amazing spot for a large gathering (such as my daughters 4 yr birthday party last year). There is a large covered area with tables to eat and meet if it is raining. There is a LARGE grassy field, approx 1.5 acres, for people to spread out tents on for those that want to camp right there. I am working on getting a BBQ dinner for that night, with the possibility of door prizes thrown in by local sponsers. We will meet and great at a time to be determined, have a bbq, lay down the track and the plans, and crash for the night. For those that do not want to camp, I have contacted a local bed and breakfast, a beautiful new place, that has 6 rooms and offers a contential breakfast. There is also a resort that offers cabin rentals. All of this is in Telkwa. Seeing how this is the TELKWA pass, I am planning the staging in Telkwa. The local business are really happy with this.

Saturday, August 14

I contacted a local resturant in Telkwa with the idea that they would make us some breakfast on the Saturday AM. They are usually closed on Saturdays but said that they would be happy to open for us and fill our bellies. I also asked them about bag lunches and they said that they can put something together for us so we will be able to stop at a lake in the pass and have a nice wholesome lunch. The restruant is also a gas station, so we will fuel up here before heading into the pass.

Things are coming togther nicely from my end. Alot of Telkwa folk are VERY happy with the idea of having an offroad ride staging in the Village. They are looking forward to seeing a ton of dirt bikes heading off to enjoy the beautiful north. Kinda like a Telkar 2010;)

Please, anyone, feel free to contact me for any preliminary info. It looks like this will be a go. There are a ton of awesome trails to ride. Basicly day 1 is looking like a straight shot through the pass and spending the night in the Terrace / Nass area, hopefully at Kitsault. On day 2, there are tons of possibilities. We are working out the idea of having a straight shot on the hwy for those that want to get going, a shot on the highway with a detour on some trails of different skill, one of them leading right to the alpine, and a route that is all dirt back to Telkwa with a total of about 20 kms of pavement. Again, these are all in the works, nothing concrete yet, but the ideas are flowing.

Also remember that the salmon will be in thick and there is a ton of other things to do in the North, so this ride might just be the start of your vacation. You could also justify to the finical institution the need to upgrade to a KTM 990 Adventurer to carry the 60 lb salmon back home.

Thanks everyone for looking and talking the time to read. Take care and talk to you soon."

Your on it Jim

Now that is the sort of plan I want to see...WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Supporting a community/and its businesses is everything..So having Telkwa open it's doors is big. (in my books this is what will keep trail rides going into the future)

Also something else whilts your contacting everyone is to let the RCMP know what is happening and the general route/plan. Trust me these folks like to know what is going on as well and if we need there assistance they will be familiar with the scenario.
I find there is no harassment from the police if they are informed...hint hint trail ride organizers out there.

There was a minor glitch with the Kitsault contact info, situation was remedied and hopefully some dialog can be started today.

I am planning a contingency route should Kitsault not be available. Meaning that Lakelse Lake should become the Day1 layover. The route would allow those that had enough to saunter back to the Beer Garden. The rest of the route would take you off the Copper River FSR, stay on mainly dirt, some single track power line under Copper Mountain and eventually to Old Remo Road and Whitebottom FSR. From Whitebottom to Onion Lake and to the campground. The Whitebottom to Onion Lake portion is an issue as there is a creek (too deep), klrnorth and I tried this last year as this would have allowed a run right back to Kitimat. There is an alternate route that needs investigation that would accomplish the same passage, yet still crossing the creek at a different location. If it would become passable, by intervention of trail building I know there would still be a need for overgrowth clearing.

Certainly would be fun to investigate the option and work required. Any volunteers?

Couple of thoughts:

Create a Photo Gallery of the proposed route - especially of the various sections in The Pass - folks could get a feel for the type ofride/terrain/difficulty offered

The Mitten Main (nr Cranberry Jct end) was closed a year or so ago to trucks due to slide. There was bridge in pretty poor condition but we just aimed straight! Not sure how soon we could scout this out but it would be good day loop for us as soon as Cranberry is passable (???)

Telkwa - Kitsault ...could be too longa haul. Remember last year's run ...it was a long day for one of our friends ...just something to consider

I'm happily lurking and being totally non-commital :TTT:

I am still in the process of trying to contact people to get the real skinny on the Mitten FSR. From one fellow that I talked to today he said that the bridge that is over the Kispiox is still good, but a bridge over a smaller creek has been removed and a deactivation has been dug. As for the slide, some of my friends tried to make it through from the Hwy 37 side and almost crossed the slide with their truck. They said the slide was no problem for a bike.

I will see if a bike can make it through the deactivation and through the removed bridge part. Once I find this out, which will hopefully be tomorrow, we can see if this route will be a plausible idea. Of course, once the snow is gone I will be making a trip up there to see for myself.

Your on it Richard. I was thinking last night that at some point we should start one in the 2010 Rides section.

I was going to go into the Village of Telkwa office either today or tomorrow and see if I can get our ride in their Events section of their webite. I will let you know how I make out.

Good work Richard. I like the work that we are putting out. It is nice to have the roles filled and have everything moving smoothly. Imagine how well prepared we will be for the 2011 ride.

I also just figured how to post with my Blackberry. Now I will become a post fiend.

Thanks.

I'll try and keep up with you Jim...:p

I'm actually shocked at how well the initial planning has gone ...but thanks 2 yourself and Mika it has been easy.
BUT the fun really starts when the route mapping trail clearing begins and that can get VERY demanding...thats usually when I loose the weak:mad3:

Insurance will be put in place but waiting till after Daytona bike week to get that ball rolling. If any sponsors, towns want to see the details with regards that will not be a problem when the time comes....so if they ask it will be taken care of:clap:

Hey Jim, since you know this area better than the rest of us. perhaps you could mark the issues of the Mitten FSR on Google Earth and email me the file so I can have an idea and reroute if needed.

consider me drummed. Been watching this fer awhile, nice to see it get more focused, was hopeful on the weekend and unfortunatly there is a conflict here in the "Loops"(loose screw). I was keen to do as was suggested here previously in the thread, and to use this (your) ride as a starting/ending? point ina Northern trip.

Ifit doesn't happen for me this time, maybe next year. should be a great ride.

This is what I was hoping for the southern folk, to make a trip out of it. If there is enough people in your area that want to go, join in on one tow rig, split the fuel, and make a trip out of it. The ride we are planning is just one VERY small portion of what the north has available. I know I would be more then happy to map out other routes for those that want to stay longer.

Also, Telkwa is only 4 hours from Prince Rupert. Why not throw in a fishing charter as well? The last time I fished the chuck in August I caught my limit of coho (4) in 2 hours. The rest of the time was spent catching halibut, watching whales, and sipping on suds. Did I forget to mention that I know some good charter guides in Rupert ;)

And for those that are more into the eco-tourism, there is the Babine River, 1.5 hrs north of Smithers where you can watch grizzly bears until your hearts content. There is also the Fulton River fish hatchery which accumulates 700,000 adult sockeye and provides them a controlled location to spawn. This is a great loop from Smithers as you can ride gravel for half and tarmac for the other half, or just take YET another FSR road back to town. No need to travel the same one twice :D

It is a fairly long way to go from the south, (12 hrs from Kelowna, 10 from Kamloops, 12 from Hope via the canyon), but in my opinion, it is a trip worth spending some extra time to explore the area. But hey, I am biased. Also keep in mind that you might be able to time it with the ferry that leaves Rupert and travels through the inside passage to Port Hardy.

Thanks for looking and even considereing 04klr. That is all we ask.

Take care.

Will do Mika. I will see what info I can get from my friends. I might be good to go to map it on Google Earth after that. I will be doing a preliminary drive up there in April to ground truth it as well. What people say might not be passable might be so for a truck and not a bike. Also, I might be able to easily see a route around the two issues.

RIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Glad to have you onboard with us. And don't worry about a truck, the torque of the DR should be enough :p

You should contact your Smithers buddy and see if he can make it, or even if he has some more buddies that would be interested. The more the merrier. If he needs my contact number, just shoot me an e-mail or PM and I can get it to you.

Throwin' a feeler out. Last year the Gingolx Crab fest was held July 3rd, with performers such as Trooper and Kim Mitchell. A possible venue should Kitsault not work out. At the same time it dawned upon me that we really need to put K'san into the mix also. Your thoughts please.

Man, you read my mind. As I was making coffee I was thinking what are we going to do if the Mitten is not passable. I also thought of Kincolith as a side shoot.

I think once we hear from Kitsault and once I can get the real skinny on the Mitten, we will be better off to plan Day 2.

I think that if Kitsault should go sideways, we can think about Lakelse Park or the Lava Beds Park as a place to camp.

One other thing that I was thinking is that it might take a while to go through the pass, depending on how many people we have and how many off shoots we do.

Ksan would be a nice place to visit, but it is too close to the start for a Day 1 camp. I would like to think that we can incorporate the 2 Mile to Telkwa via dirt route into Day 2 if we can, for those that want to take it. Those that want to get going can just ride the tarmac back to Telkwa.

The way I see this trip forming is that the group will travel on mass through the pass. After that night of camping, people might just want to go their own way and do their own thing. I think we have to be open minded about this as well.

Hey Mika, how long did it take you guys to go from Terrace to Kitsault via bike?
