Sleeping with and running faster, and hot lead love, I really really want to respond, I am not going to, other than say it must of been a way longer winterout your way than here!

You know, I responded in a certain manner, but then edited my comment as I was trying to keep this a G rated thread. :)

The official Day 2, After The Pass event overnighter will be at the Kitimat FSR Forest Service campsite on Saturday August 14th. The sight has toilet(s) and tables, nothing more. The road to the campsite is accessible via RV, truck and trailer, even small passenger vehicles. Food, bevies, barbecue etc. will hopefully be arranged and delivered for us by some gracious volunteer(s). ;);)

For those that prefer to avoid such rustic conditions, these are very nearby possible alternative options.

Unless there is more definitive confirmation of participation by those interested locally or from farther reaches, be prepared to pack a tent and sleeping bag throughout the ride. As of now, there will be NO chase or support vehicle for this year. The Pass and rest of the route is rideable carrying the extra gear.

The Day 3 Return meeting point will be at the Shell Station on the corner of Highway 16 and Kalum Lake Road. Here you can fuel up, and grab snacks 'n' bevies for the final leg. Time to be confirmed later.

Day 2 Telkwa Pass Day will probably be 5-6 hours for most without any additional detours.
Day 3 Return Leg will likely be around 6-7 hours.

What is needed now to assist in the final preparations is for those interested to confirm that they will joining the ride on August 14/15 2010. Please PM me or email [email protected] if interested with name, how many in your party, camping or other option, preferred riding pace (speed demon, average, scenic cruiser). Contact me via either method at your earliest convenience or if you have any concerns or need additional information.

NO Fees- NO Shirts!

Come out and see the Northwest! :hb:

Right on. Thanks for locking down the second night. This give me all the reason I need to now proceed with making some luggage for my bike :)

Thanks again for all the work everyone. It is going to be a good ride.

You guys are really nailing this down. Thanks for all the hard work and figuring this thing out:hb:

If it helps, I have plenty of excuses to visit Smithers for work and will commit to being in Smithers and Hazelton, somewhere between the 9th and the 13th. I will transport your gear to Terrace and have my good lady wife, deliver it to the campsite on the Saturday.

Doing the pass without luggage would be a far nicer option.

Mika, you can count me in as wingman on your scouting missions. I have a long list of reasons for being late home, already prepared:mb:

Right on Kermode. Thanks a ton for helping out that way. That will be a great help as now I can be a little more reckless through the pass without the copious amount of precious lager on board :hb:

Good timing on the video game Mika. Here is the START of the Telkwa FSR as of 12:00 today:

485Telkwa_FSR_Mar_8.JPG

It was -10 here this morning. Let's all think warm thoughts so we can get er going already. :dr:

Forgot to add, I talked with one of my friends at Forestry and they informed me that the Mitten FSR is 100% passable with the bridge in question repaired and the road well maintained. It looks like they have to maintain it so that there is a loop from the Hazelton area to Hwy 37 in case of a slide or an issue on Hwy 16. So this stretch will be high speed FSR for sure and we can commit to our plan for the second day of riding.

Hello Gents.
Greetings from the Lowermainland.
I am heading on another Alaska/Yukon trip starting the first week of Aug 2010.
I am looking for more routes that are not on pavement.
I would like to head west off #16 around Telka or Cow Creek to Terrace or
Skeena Crossing and then back up to Kitwanga and head north or to Prince Rupert and take a ferry.

Below is a link to a site that displays gpx routes online for people who do not have mapsource.
The problem I have is the FSR do not seem to connect but are real close.
Looking for some local knowledge to view the route and comment on whether it is passable.
We will be on KLR650 and DR350 so can handle tighter routes than the big bore bikes.
Thanks in advance
Tim

Hello Tim,

Seeing as I can't sleep, I might as well help out a fellow rider. I know the route you mapped out as I have been studying it also as one of the rides I wanted to do this year. From all appearances it doesn't seem possible, but maybe bchunter may be able to shed more light on this problem. However it's on my investigate list, so by the time you are traveling I should be able to give you a definitive answer to this dilemma.

"I would like to head west off #16 around Telka or Cow Creek to Terrace or
Skeena Crossing and then back up to Kitwanga and head north or to Prince Rupert and take a ferry.
"

Now this has me somewhat baffled as I can't really determine which is your destination. Are you on your way back from the Yukon or still going, going to Terrace or Rupert?

If you were going to Terrace, I'd certainly suggest that you take the Telkwa Pass route if you haven't been through yet. I will take you through if you like, might be some other test pilots willing to come along. If you are heading North to the Yukon/Alaska via the Cassiar Hwy, we will have a GPS route for you from Telkwa via the Kispiox FSR to the Cassiar Hwy by then. Both of these routes, in my opinion are better options than the one you mapped out.

On another note, I had on my "do list" the Yukon for this year. When exactly do you plan on leaving the lower mainland for the Great White North? And are laggers welcome?

Good morning Tim. The route that you listed is inpassable. I beleive that when the roads were first being put in, the thought was to connect them, but then the mountains seemed to get in the way. Silly mountains. I know alot of locals would like this to work, but it does not. I have been to the end on either side just to confirm that there is no loop.

sparklr is correct, that if you want to leave tarmac at Telkwa, then the Telkwa Pass is the best route to Terrace. This route will shave off the most time and be the most direct route, plus the most scenic.

From Terrace, I am not sure if you want to go to Rupert and catch a ferry to Alaska or if you want to continue up Hwy 37 to Alaska.

If you want to go up Hwy 37, then I suggest the first part of the loop that we are planning, Terrace - New Aiyansh - Cranberry FSR to Hwy 37. From there, it is a straight shot on the Hwy to Yukon / Alaska. I do not know of many loop roads in that neck of the woods, but I can look into it is need be as I have a freind that lives in Dease Lake.

sparklr will also be able to help you with some side roads, if there are any between Terrace and Rupert.

I can make some other loops for you, just depending on your timeframe. Just let me know and I will make it so.

Also, just throwing it out there, if the time works for you, you can join us on our Telkwa Pass run, camp with us the night, and depart north once we hit Hwy 37 on day 2.

Airride:

Anyone coming West from Prince George area could keep off Hwy 16 by following thenetwork of backroads / FSR's south of Vanderhoof - Burns Lake - Houston - Telkwa (take The Pass from here to Terrace) ...or cross Hwy 16 on the "Telkwa High Road" past Smithers to Mauricetown (now a bit of Hwy 16) ...then Old Hazelton / Kispiox FSR's to Cranberry Junction then a blast up to Meziadin Jct ....

As others noted - from Terrace - north to Aiyansh then East along Cranberry Connector to Hwy 37

Stewart & Hyder is always a good run up to the mines - don't forget your passport to re-enter Canada!

Next time I'm up Hwy 37 North ...I want to look around Telegraph Creek & Cassiar Mine

PS...good news on the Mitten/Helen FSR route

Hey guys, just as a thought, Kermode said that he can bring our gear from Telkwa to Kitimat, so we can do the pass empty. But I am presuming for those that are going back to Telkwa on Day 2 that we will have to pack our gear with us for Day 2. This should not be a problem as there will be alot of of easy FSR.

Just thought I would post this up, as for me at least I still have to keep what I pass to Kermode packable on the Doc. Just food for thought.

The biggest and best thing about Kermode's offer to help is that I won't have to contend with the case of Corona through the pass :hb:

Hey guys. I was up to the top of the Kispiox today and took a look at the Mitten from this side. Man, there is barely any snow up there. You could ride all the way up the Kispiox to 80+ km. There are some icy spots in the shadows, but nothing that is crazy. The Mitten has maybe 1 ft of snow on it. There is barely any snow in the bush. It is really light for March, that is for sure.

If we hope, this loop might be open sooner than we think

Was that by truck? I'm guessing here that the 80 Km mark gets us close to the Cassiar Hwy?

I'm gonna go for an invite for this weekend! :hb:

Ya, it was by truck, but up the Kispiox Trail, not the Mitten. The Mitten still has some snow on it and we did not try it, but the Kispiox Trail is clear all the way to around 80 km.

Hey guys, let's make sure we have lots of camera's and video of this trip. I just made a video of a sled trip that I did and it took me now time at all - put it to music, slowed down the bails and the wheelies .......

It shall be a great time.
