With 20 years of riding under your belt I think the 690 would be a good bike to start your off road career.... I sat on one at the bike show and it seemed to be a couple inches lower at the seat than my 640 and lower than just about all the other enduro class bikes {X challenge, Husky 610, DR 400, ect.}.... Also it has a 4 position switchable mapping under the seat so you can change the power characteristics of the motor with the flick of a switch....

KTM is coming out with some hard boxes + framework as well as a larger fuel tank if you wanted to use the bike for Adventure touring....

Hi

I just got the KTM 690E and all I can say its agreat bike handles well feels pretty lite and works well off road alsoplenty of power. As you can see by my usernameI was going to buy the Xchallenge until this bike came along and so far I couldn'tbe happier. If you want one of these bikes it could be tough to find one.Ilooked in to buying one on island and Victoria dealer already had his 2soldthat he was getting. So I went to Spunky's and put a deposit on one May 3 and it arrived and I picked itup just last week.Just a couple more things the gearing is a bit tall for real slow stuff and the first thingyou want to do if you get one is build a shield for signal light behind exhaust.Minewasmelted after just 100km.

Glad to hear you like the bike. Do you mind if I ask you how much you paid? I imagine there's not much discounting on new models.

How goes your 690 enduro a few months on?

Trying to decide between a TE610 and one of these.

Updated 690:

2009 KTM 690 Enduro R competition ready
2009_KTM_690_Enduro_R.jpg
Longer travel suspension, a minimalist headlight and fairing, a more aggressive front fender, Pirelli MT 21s, cleaner clocks and revised graphics all combine to make the 2009 KTM 690 Enduro R even more competitive than its non-R sibling. KTM bill the 690 Enduro as the “ultimate all-rounder,” equally capable of tackling highways or trails. We expect the R to sacrifice some of that on-road ability in the name of off-road performance. No official price or specs yet, but the R will share the 654cc, 62bhp single-cylinder with several other bikes in the KTM range and should share the 690 Enduro’s no-fuel 139kg weight. Compare the two visually after the jump.

25mm moreSuspension travel front/rear and colour are the only differences between E and R.I have the 690Enduro and I don't think I would like it any taller.

Can't wait to see the 690 Enduro at the bike show.

A few items I like:

Durable motor, not in race spec, still makes over 60Hp, 60 Ft/lbs as what KTM says.

The sub frame / fuel tank is too cool. Although weight is distributed more on one side of the bike beacause of the muffler or not knowing engineers.

They say that the seat is comfortable, but you shouldn't be spending to much time sitting on it with the bikes capabilities. It get's slagged in reviews as they compare it to the 450 which is really dumb. The bikes in its own class.

Looks like a winner. I want to buy.

After drooling over the You tube Vids I see the gas filler cap is behind the seat at the tail of the bike. Makes sense since thats where the fuel tank is.Nice feature the three mode mapping switch. Come on KTM let's put it up on the handle bars for easier accessibility.

With your height Brian, the taller "R" version should be a good fit.... I sat on the standard version last year and it felt a couple inches lower than my 640.....

Maybe see you at the show...

I will be working at one of the Suzuki displays. I should be easily found.

This would be the type of bike that if it were in a showroom I would purchase it. I have a feeling that all of the bikes that come in will be prepurchased.

More tech: fly by wire throttle, counter balanced motor, slipper clutch, six speed

The differences I can see from the 690 Enduro to the S model is 1" more suspension travel, a seat height of 35.83" to 36.61". Ground clearance is the same at 11.81"

KTM will offer an 18 litre tank. The big tank may put the filler cap behind the steering head. The whole seat and sub frame would be one piece.

The frame design does not offer protection to the bottom of the motor. The motor is suspended from the top with no frame rails running along the bottom of the motor.
Will have to seethe bash plate mounting locations.

After reading more tests some other issues are: The gas filler cap at the rear can become caked with dirt allowing grit into the gas tank when filling. The bike is a six speed but the ratio's are very close. A higher gear ratio is not offered for hwy travel.

Here is one companys converted 690 R to an adventure bike:http://www.rrr.de/~phil/IMG_6020.JPG

They came up with a conventional tank to go along with the underseater that almost doubles fuel capacity to give it a 500+ KM range... The seat has been changed to make things work....

Ktm isnt in a hurry to update the RIV list. Last time I checked, none of the 690s were on the list. Of course it doesnt make it impossible, just much harder to get em in the country.

I got a quote in 08 to bring one in from Austria, landed US$45k......and then you have a slight issuewith not being able to register it.

Buy a new 690 Enduro (if you can find one) and add the Rally Kit, that is the only way get the coolest bike in your garage.....all the parts are available from KTM, since it is a (Race) production bike.....once the dust settles you will have spent less than to buy a new GS1200, not that any one would want to buy one :tup:but it does put things in perspective.

You gotta love KTM for that.

I am just wanting the 690 enduro to use for trips, and given the financial nightmare in the states I figure in a year or so they will be cutting prices down there. I am not too partial to the rallye look myself, just a bigger fuel tank would do me. I will keep checking the riv site to see if it gets updated. thanks
