'95 XT350, turn signals malfunction

While riding my bike today I found out that my turn signals are cutting out at odd times. I'll be riding just fine and the signals will be working perfectly then suddenly they will just stop flashing, the bulbs are all fine cause the lights are still on, they just wont flash.

From what I can see the control boxes under the seat an beside the batt are fine... Has this happened to anyone else?

Will just "any" relay work? Or is there a certain type I should invest in?

You just have to find out how and whereyours is wired in.When you take off your seat and turn on the signal lights you should hear a "clicking"sound...no sound its broken,if your lights on on.An regular 2 prong relay should work.I think I have one in my shop, will post pic if I have one so you know what one looks like.I paid $5.00 for a heavy duty one and it works great.

Many years ago a wise old motorcyle guy told me that motorcycle electrical problems are almost always the battery. I'd jumper your 12 volt battery with another good battery and check the signals again. A weak battery can cause the signals to suddenly stop because initially there is enough voltage, but as current is drawn the voltage decreases until the flasher won't cycle.

The flasher unit is simply a metal spring heated by a coil. The spring has a contact that turns the lights on, then as the spring heats it distorts and shuts off the contact, the spring cools and the cycle is repeated. In order for it to work the bulbs have to be the correct size and the battery has to have a full charge.

The heater coil and the bulbs take a good size current , and if the battery is weak the flasher will flash normally until the voltage droops and then won't heat the spring and the bulbs will just stay on.

I bet your battery is shotTibby...

If I can't figure it out, I think I'll just Frankenstein up a signal deelee of my own... I had to do the same with my KZ440

I'll trade ya! X3

Nah, signals are easy things to fix, if the problem is such that i can't run them through the stock system, I'll just make a signal system.

Also, how are you liking the DRZ? How does it compare to the XT? (Fun wise, ease of ride, Umph, ect...)

The tank comes off really easy, all you have to do is pull the seat and then there are just two bolts holding the tank on (don't forget to turn the petcock off and disconnect the fuel line). I can have mine off in less than five minutes.
