Quoted from an ADV Rider forum...

Rotax will not be building the 650 thumper engine anymore,

the X Country's engine will be built in China to BMW quality and specs.

Kymco in Taiwan is building the motor for the G450X.

Checked one out at Pacific Yamaha BMW today. It is a really sweet looking bike. Three year warranty on none wear parts but didnotice thatpiston, rings, crank, cams, followers etc. were considered wear parts (which I suppose is fair considering what type of use one of these might get).

Overall, I was impressed with the stainless steel frame, the Ohlin rear shock and the overall quality, fit and finish. It does have a smallish tank, like my Sherco and the seat is similar (read hard). Mounting a substantial skid plate will be interesting with the underslung engine. If it lives up to the 50 HPclaims it will be a rocket.

I look forward to seeing a few out there in the trails.

Rode one yesterday...allI can say is OMG! Seems really sturdy and easyto ride. (Yes, I know I need that) I'm really on the fence, KTM 530 or BMW 450 but I'm really leaning towards the BMW.I just plain think it's purdy. It's just a little weak in the aftermarket parts. I am really concerned about the skid plate availability, although I watched the redbull romaniacs video again and saw that Gerhart was riding with the stock plastic skip plate when he bent his shifter. Hopefully PacYam will bring one out to the newbie ride for demos.

Aw WTF, I ordered the BMW, should have it next week ,if I do, I'll certainly be taking it to the noobie ride, stock skid plate and all.

Congratulations, I am sure you are going to love your new G450X. Excellent review in TBM (Trailbike and Enduro Magazine out of England). Let me know if you want to borrow my copy. The author of the article suggests that even BMWrecommends the Akrapovic pipe as the stock catalytic unit is only there for homologation and gets hot and limits power. Speaking of power, make sure the racing jumper is installed (comes with the bike apparently) to get full power. Probably another homologation work around.

In Europe they come with 3 countershaft sprockets and the writer indicates it is very tall geared with big gaps with the 15 tooth so you may wish to install one of the smaller ones. BMW has thought out countershaft sprocket changes and it can be done in under 15 minutes although it calls for a few tools.

As far as the bash plate, the cases have been engineered and reinforced to handle more abuse but I would have an aluminum plate on there soon. With all the ground clearance I don't think you will use it that often but just in case...

Good luck with your new bike...old trials guy

congrats!!

The jumper and at least one extra countershaft sprocket comes in the bad of goodies that comes with the bike, also the pipe and the stock mapping is engineered to pass emissions...thats pretty much it, i found the it seemed to run the way it should after the jumper is installed (even with the stocker pipe on)

Good luck with your new toy and feel free to pop over to the island to give us at Island BMW a visit

[font="Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif"][font="Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif"]Enduro: David Knight goes to BMW ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
by Visordown News [font="Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif"][/font]
[/font] Multiple world champ ends his long-term relationship with KTM

Multiple World Enduro Champion David Knight has sensationally ended his long-term relationship with KTM and signed to ride for BMW Motorrad in the 2009 World Enduro Championship as well as contest the International Six Days Enduro and other high-profile events for the German brand. The big Manxman, who is currently wrapping up his second consecutive title in the blue-riband US Grand National Cross Country series for the KTM factory, made a surprise appearance on BMW's latest 450cc dirt bike at a local enduro event on the Isle of Man on Sunday 21 September, blitzing the entire field during this shake-down test after announcing his career move for next year. Having already held secret tests on his own track on the Island, Knight reported that the BMW in standard preproduction form was significantly faster than his works KTM four-stroke tool. Knight had previously said that he was "bored" with the GNCC series in America and wanted to return to the world stage but KTM preferred him to continue promoting its wares in the big US off-road market.

The German Cross Country series just ended. The 450s finished the lastrace1[suP]st[/suP], 3[suP]rd[/suP], 9[suP]th[/suP], and 10[suP]th[/suP]. Which puts the final rankings for the year at:

GCC final standings, XCPro class
1. Simo Kirssi, 175 points BMW
2. Cyrille Coulon, 155 Yamaha
3. Bert Meyer, 127 BMW
4. Steffen Albrecht, 119 Yamaha
5. Andy Boller, 104 KTM
6. Falko Karbautzki, 100 KTM
7. Thomas Günther, 88 Husaberg
8. Marco Straubel, 76 ?
9. Martin Schneider, 70 ?
10. Stefan Geyer, 68 ?

and now they've added David Knight, the best rider in the world, to the roster........Yikes!

Please let us know what the scheduled maintenance is like. I am really interested in that bike, but if it is high maintenace like the KTMs then I will not buy it. Please look at the manual and let us know how it looks.

Thanks

It is a race bike and will be putting out enormous amounts of power for its displacement. So the maintenance is high. A lot of engine components are wear items so they will not be covered by the warranty. It is better that a BMW rep answer this question in detail as my knowledge is hearsay - from said BMW rep.

So I wouldn't run it as a daily driver. Only to scare myself on weekends.

hey hey, thats my name!

The first service is @ 2 hours (inclusive of an oil + filter change and lube the swing arm pivot) thereafter the service interval is every 10 hours (which is an overall check over and oil + filter) the bike only holds 1.15 liters of oil and as subman said a race bike (10 hours of riding is about a race weekend (pratice, qualify and race-day))

also if you are on the highway for extended periods of time at wide open throttle a warning message will come on the dash telling you to ease off, if you keep on it it will fault out the "super brain" which will come up at the next service or when you want warranty on you blown motor ;)

It is the hardest of hard enduro's

If you want a day to day commuter i would go for the Xchallenge which has 10,000 km service intervals (just under 200 hours depending on how you ride)
