I went and did some test rides today, with the Power Plug in and out to see how the fuel economy differed. Here are my results.

Previous ride
Power Plug in - Tight trails, snow and sand, full on riding - 10kms per ltr

Today
Power Plug in - Road ride 14.1kms per ltr
Power Plug out - Road ride 19.6kms per ltr

So the power plug makes a huge difference to fuel economy, and the bike runs great with it out.
19.6kms per ltr give a range of about 160kms so that matches Toms thoughts.
Neil - Id be interested on your finding on your trail riding with the plug out.

The above figures are all with a 14 tooth counter shaft sprocket.

Not quite sure if this is the place for my questions or if this should be a new topic, but what do you think are mandatory mods for the G450X for offroad singletrack riding? I'll be picking up my bike mid April (and I'm so excited I think I just wet myself....again:cool:), and I'd like to properly equip it before breaking something. Most riding will occur in the foothills of Alberta and the Rockies.

I've considered the following, but am not sure on brands or where to purchase for the best price.

Skid plate (which one offers the best protection)

Rad guard (does anyone make one with side/front protection)

Remote power setting switch (for the EFI mapping plug)

Barkbusters (full wrap around kind)

Plus, where can you get the European LED signal lights/brake lights and rear fender from? The NA lights seem a little too bulbous and exposed for my liking.

Finally....how well suited are the stock tires for offroad use? And, any problems with pinch flats using the stock tubes?

Thanks for the help :)

I love this BIKE!!!!:)Everytime I get on it I have to start smiling and that smile doesn't usually end till I have to go to work. I've had a few issues that are to be expected with a first year bike. I have done the light switch mod. and since then no starting problems even when doing trail marking (lots of starts). I am also working with the dealer on a recurring fuel leaking from the vent tube. We've tried a couple of different things and still no luck. Anyone else out there experiencing this? It's a small amount of fuel being pushed out the vent tube. I also find the suspension really stiff for the type of riding I like to do. Itraded with a guy ona KTM 450 on the weekend and did some gnarly trails and the KTM was absolutely plush compared to mine. I'm going to try putting 2.5wt oil into the front forks to see if this helps, if not I'll look at some spring changes. Of course the kick stand is so light you can't use it for anything other than holding the bike on level ground but once you know that it's not a problem. Only other problem it the lack of aftermarket large gas tanks. I've seen them advertised but the release date keeps getting pushed out. I'm at 100 hours (4150km) and other than the fuel it just keeps on pulling. I'm going to bank on the fact that I'm not racing the bike and hold off on the 70 hour service till 140 hours. I'm getting a quote this week on what that'll cost as it looks like a re and re on the engine. I just do the oil and filter every ten hours or two rides and keep on riding. I also added a little goop to the front headlight adjusting screw to prevent it from rattling.

Bottom line is everytime I go out riding I'm amazed I don't bottom out on crossditches that on my first bike I'd hit so hard I'd hurt my feet and when I suddenly come up on the crossditch I'm able to just crack the thottle and pop over it. I just smile!

Cheers,

Neil

I find it strange for a fuel injector to have a "vent tube". Since FI relies on fuel pressure bypass fuel recirculates in the tank as part of the fuel pump assembly. What many fuel injector bodies have is an alternate fuel line connection point for bikes with fuel delivery on the opposite side. This alternate fuel spiggot is then capped off. On the FI Sherco's this cap has been known to fail or the clamp that holds it loosens resulting in fuel loss. Maybe the "vent" hose is actually supposed to becappedlike on the Sherco. Sherco uses a Moto Marelli system.

Just a thought....otg

OTG - do you mean the Sherco has no vent tube from the top of the tank to vent expanding gas or let air in to replace the fuel that has been used? Mine is not leaking from the lower section it is from the vent tube at the top (or in my case the back of the tank)

Sorry, I thought it was a line off of the injector. Sherco comes with an unrestricted vent hose on the gas cap.

Fuel coming out of the tank vent would suggest the fuel tank is somehow becoming pressurized. Have your removed the fuel pump to check for plugged fuel filter? Is the check valve in the fuel line defective?

ADV link discusses riders who have removed the fuel tank vent hose check valve with no ill effects. Maybe you have a pressure buildup in the tank due to a partially plugged vent check valve? Do you hear a pressure release when you remove your gas cap after running for awhile? That would be an indicator.

I would ditch the check valve and see what happens, from what the links and common sense leads one to think is it is there as an environmental requirement.

You probably checked all this stuff but good luck with your problem. I hope mine is solved tonight when I install a new pulse coil on my Sherco.

Thanks for the input Neil:hb:

I'm shopping for a new bike...and after Island BMW put the graphics kit on the 450X....it's near the top of my list. I'm just a little concerned about the tear down/to keep warranty issue....I've been told it's about $1900....other than that I LOOOVE the bike. My other two are the new Husaberg FE450 or 570 ...and the new Suzuki RMX450Z...

when i talked to john valks mechanic my concerns bmw he told me that the specs and service is designed for the serious racing guys therefore more service required.

The service is not anymore than other modles out there. Just ride and have fun .

most other dealers only have 6 months warrenty. the guys in victoria are good to deal with . cheers Rick
