The KLR is basically a bike in a starter kit format. As is it works great for a lot of people. Others start with the "kit" and start to make it the bike they want. More street oriented, or motard, more adventure touring, or more dirt. Change the tires, pipe, add luggage, change the gearing, etc. I think it's a great platform to modify.
I'm glad they left the doohickey. I had to open up the engine to do that and having never attempted that sort of engine surgery, it was a major achievement. It gave me the confidence to try all the other maintenance/repairs etc.
