Besides, I was hoping someone can show me how to load and use this "Ride=214" file.
I saved it as a Garmin file. I'm guessing it needs to be copied to a SD Card ?

Hi Bryn, Alex has given you the correct advice, but in case you're an absolute noob at this here's the same advice in a little more detail. You do not need to copy the file to an SD card, but first you need to download it and save it to your hard drive.

After the file has been downloaded and saved plug your GPS device into your computer via a USB slot and then open Garmin Mapsource. Click on "file" at the top left. A drop down menu will appear, click on open. A directory tree for your hard drive will appear. Double click on the file you downloaded from www.bike.stu.ph and the track will appear in Garmin Mapsource. Click on the tab at the top of Mapsource labled "transfer" and then click on "send to device". Mapsource will automatically find your GPS device and send the track to it. After the transfer is complete open the "menu" on your GPS device and select "tracks". When the track menu opens you will see the track you just transferred listed in the bottom half of the menu page where the saved tracks are listed. Select the track and the saved tracks options page will open. Near the bottom you will see a small box with the words "show on map" beside it. There should be a check mark in this box. If there is no check mark, position the cursor so that "show on map" is highlighted then select it and the checkmark will appear. The track will now appear on your GPS screen. You can verify this by selecting "map" at the bottom of the track options page. The GPS screen will now display the downloaded track.

Hope this helps. If you have any problems bring your GPS to the pub tomorrow night and we can work it out.

Never really thought about it but we could've met at a Sunday Bruces breaky for a preride meeting.

Alex.

Alex, you do come up with the good ideas. Why don't we do both? There are currently 7 of us who are going to the pub Thursday (tomorrow) night, with possibly more to come. I think it'd be great if we could get as many of the riders signed on to this trip to meet up at Bruce's (Bruces Country Market - corner of Lougheed and 240th St in Albion) have a breaky mtg and then go for a ride - destination to be determined. How about it guys, who's up for breaky at Bruces?

The pub-nite is scheduled for tomorrow, June 3 at 7:00PM. The pub is:

Guildford Station Pub
10176 154 Street, Surrey

So far there are five riders out of 17 who are going to the pub. Those going to the pub are:

Tmurrayis
Eagleguy
Westcoast
Caribooster
Farp

What do you guys think? Is this enough to make the pub-nite worth while? I'm quite happy to go if that's all there is but some of you might think otherwise. So post up and let us know.

John

Are we on for tonight? I have another rider group meeting to go to if this is not on.

Personally if less than a third of the group is attending I think I will pass and just meet you all on Wed AM.

I am on an overnight ride this weekend (to Lillooet coincidently) so can't make breakfast on Sunday.

Thanks, John, that's a pretty good tutorial. Unfortunately I haven't been able to give it a try yet.
I might make some progress on it before tonight at Guilford Station.

Two more are coming to the pub so that makes a total of 7, including yourself. It's not of any great importance that you make it to the pub; it's more of a social thing than anything else. So, if you have another mtg to attend, no problem, we'll see ya Wed morning at The Old Settler Pub parking lot in Harrison Hot Springs. We want to be on the road by 9:00 so try to get there about 8:30 as we'll be splitting into smaller groups for the ride.

Ok. That's a plan then.

I have a TomTom Rider Gps for my street bike that I use on the KLR. It has an offroad program which directs to the next waypoint. However, it has no map and I am not sure how it will work with your track. I mainly use it to locate myself on the backroad map so I have a general idea of where I am. Not much good in other words.

On another subject I will be bringing slime and an inflater for puncture repair. Does anyone know if it works? At the flat tire social it was mentioned as making a hell of a mess of the tire but I did not hear if it can be relied on to get me out. I could bring a spare front tube and tools too just in case.

There are a lot of mixed opinions about slime. I've never used it and don't think I ever will. Here's a website with a lot of user reviews about slime. Some people love it and others hate it. Seems to work for small holes such as those caused by thorns but it doesn't work on holes bigger than 1/8".

http://www.mtbr.com/cat/tires-and-wheels/tube/slime/tire-sealant/PRD_353521_154crx.aspx

I always carry a small bicycle pump, tire irons and a patch kit with me. If you can locate the hole you can often repair the tube without taking the wheel off the bike. Just lay the bike on its side, pry the tire over the rim on one side and pull out enough of the tube to expose the hole. Apply a patch, stuff the tube back and re-seat the tire on the rim. Pump it up and you're ready to go. Be careful that you don't have any overlaps or twists in tube when you stuff it back in the tire.

Slime may have some favourable results on a bicycle, but with a coupla hundred kms of fsr to do on a motorcycle I'll stick with the traditional repair. Did try it once on an old import pickup truck, lasted about a week, did something weird to the tire and weak spots in sidewall appeared. Went to have a traditional repair done and when the young feller broke the bead of the tire all sorts of noxious gasses escaped and he hacked and choked for 5 minutes, felt bad but figured I saved him some grief by limiting his chance to ever procreate. Anyways if the slime doesn't work your back at square one with a gooey tube and gooped up tire valve.

Cheers, Alex.

PS, I plan on having breaky at Rockos diner in Mission at about 7 a.m. before heading out for the ride meetup in Harrison on the 9th.

I just booked the remaining room, so will not have to share the room with One Lung. Thanks Eric for the offer.

Aaaahhh! I haven't been checking this thread often enough and now I find out that I missed out on beer! I'll try to make up for it on Wednesday in Lillooet.
I was originally planning on riding the new 'Berg but realized that the old KLR would be a better choice with it's extended range and bags. It's been sitting neglected though so now I'm doing fork seals, new battery, and sprockets and chain. Some of the parts don't arrive till Tuesday so I'm not sure what I'll be riding but I'll be there for sure.

I Just got a disturbing email from Vortexman who just returned from the Kookipi rock slide. He indicated (all he said was he'd like to meet anybody that made it through) that it was impassable for a bike. I've asked him for some more details but I think the only thing to do is to ride up there tomorrow and see for my self. I'd really like some company. Anybody up for a ride to the Kookipi rock slide tomorrow. Meet up a Bruces at 9:00AM and then truck the bikes to Harrison Hot Springs, ride from there.

Tobster, Ruskin Rider and I went up Kookipi today from Harrison Hot Springs. About 15 km from the pass we were turned back because of snow; it's absolutely impassable for a bike.

So We're down to two options. We can start the ride from Boston Bar and ride the Texas Creek road to Lillooet. This means we'll get to Lillooet in the early afternoon so that should give us time to ride one of the options from Hwy 99 to Pavillion and back south again where we'll come out at Lytton. We can then ride Hwy 12 back to Lillooet. Day 2 we can take the Hat Creek/Botanie lake route to Lytton and then the Nicomen FSR to Boston Bar and then home.

The 2nd option is to ride the sea to sky to Pemberton then D'Arcie, Seton Hi-line, Mission Mtn to Lillooet. Day 2 we'd ride Hwy 99 north and then take one of two routes south to Lytton, then Nicomen FSR to Boston Bar and on to home.

We could even split in to two groups with one group doing the Pemberton route on day one and the other starting at Boston Bar and then meeting up in Lillooet at the end of day one.

Post up guys, let's hear what you think.

I'll post some photos of the conditions on Kookipi later but I just got home and I gotta hit the shower and grab a bite.

Well, I was going to take my KTM, but it's not geared for the Hi-way. So I am just wondering how this new route would be for my 1200? (I would need to put a new back tire on it.) I would rather take the 1200 from a camping stand point.

And thanks as well for the scounting too.

I haven't followed this entire thread, but isn't the original West Harrison route still a logical & viable option? Sure, you'd have to navigate the fallen trees, but really now with so much man power it should not even be a factor. Yeah, maybe the forestry service won't like it, or maybe they won't know or even care about it :)

I'd reconsider West Harrison. If I've miised some pertinent info regarding West Harrison then disregard this post :)

Thanks for the scouting today. I got off work and was contemplating sleeping for a few hours then joining you, but that didn't happen.
Did you guys venture much into the snow? I'm wondering how much of it there is.

I'm up for pretty much anything but I think I like Option #2 the most.

I would like to take the Pemberton route, leaving ft. langley area about 9 to miss some of the traffic. So if others choose this route ,we can plan to meet in North Van. to ride together, the slab to Pemberton, est. 3 to 4 hrs. then hit the dirt, best guess is 3 to 4 hrs.to Lillooet I need to find out if we can call someone about the highline rd conditions, or at least snow.
PS, hey Kid, I know of other guys that were also up to the snow, pushed thru the first part , rode a ways then it really got bad, he said no possible way thru.

I promised you some photos of our ride up to Kookipi and here they are. The ride started well and riding conditions were good. Here's Toby and Nick enjoying the scenery.

436IMGP0403-med.jpg

And what great scenery it was.

436IMGP0398-med.jpg

The road at this point was clear and riding conditions were good. Toby was in such high spirits he thought he could fly if he flapped his arms hard enough.

436IMGP0400-med.jpg

But then conditions got a little worse. We rode through several snotty patches such as this:
436IMGP0404-med.jpg

And we were hopeful it wouldn't get any worse, but it did. In a short while we ran into this and it stopped us cold (pun intended).
436IMGP0407-med.jpg

We scouted ahead on foot to see if it would get better, but it didn't and this is all we could see.
436IMGP0408-med.jpg

The snow was old and dense and gave so much resistance to the front wheel that making progress through it was extremely difficult. The only way you could move was to bulldog the bike ahead pushing as hard as you could while spinning the rear wheel, and the result was that in about 20 meters you became totally exhausted. As we were still about 15km from the pass and it was pretty much uphill all the way we decided there was nothing left to do but head back.

Sorry to disapoint the riders who are going on the ride this Wed but we are going to have to think of something else. I mentioned a couple of options in a previous post and I can't think of any other alternatives. I could call Jeff Ladd in the BCFS tomorrow and request permission to cross their baricade at the washout but I strongly doubt he would give it. Even if he did there are still about 20km of bad road leading up to the washout. This road is not big bike friendly and is well beyond the original idea of this ride that it should be do-able by an inexperienced rider on a big bike. so, for those reasons the west Harrison route is out.

Will all the riders signed on to the trip please post to let me know that they've got the message. I will PM all those who haven't posted by supper time tomorrow.

Here's another option for consideration.
Up the canyon to Boston Bar, Texas Creek road to Lillooet then take the pavement over the Duffy Lake road to Mount Curry. Return to Lillooet via Darcy and Seton Portage. It would be a long day though.
