Hey, loosing signal lights aside, The last time I checked, ICBC insured bikes for the road, not offroad. I'm just telling him what he'll need so he runs into as few problems as possible. Believe it or not I'm actually trying to help.

Front turn signals I do have. I just need the rear ones.

I have a bucket of old XR200 parts in my garage. Next time you are down in the PoCo area drop by and pick up the free junk if you want it. PM me if interested.

actually you do have a good point there about insuring the bikes. the FSR should at least count as covered by icbc but i wonder about all the other spots.
I am posting my pic again just to see if it turns, odd how it was straight on my desktop and went sideways in the post.

if icbc did cover off roading can you imagine all th 4x4 claims :spl::spl::spl::spl:

sorry fargo wolf i dont have a pic of the xl i rode a little last summer at the bro's cabin,

it looked just like yours but as if i had been riding it (banged up).

Maybe it's the built in design feature of orange bikes to go sideways and then fall down.....hee hee

You wouldn't happen to have a new front brake cable or speedo cable that would fit/work, would you?

No, but I have an old XR200 speedo. Round one with resettable odometer.
Free!!!

Any Honda speedo cable that is the same length or a bit longer will work. They all have the same fittings in the early years. Speedo drive cables don't last long as they are always getting kinked causing them to bind and break.

Just take your old housing into a Honda shop and they should be able to match it. Just make sure it is long enough it doesn't have a sharp bend when the forks are fully extended. Never buy just the inner cable because the damaged housing is what makes them break.

Brake cable should be new Honda so it fits right. You can improve brakes slightly by installing the wider shoes used in later model XR250 rear brakes. Same mounting but a little wider providing more brake surface. It's a good thing its a four stroke cause the only brake that works more than a couple of weeks is the engine braking (haa haa)

There's new brake shoes on the bike now. I owe Shewolf some money for that, as they were to go on an old Honda she has. As for the speedo and brake cables... I went to the Honda dealer in Valleyview and have one of each on order. They should be here by Wed. All that remains for me to do, is get a gear cover and some better mirrors.

Just a quick comment - ICBC does not insure vehicles for travel on FSR roads - (any vehicle). Many of my friends were shocked to hear this but it shouldnt be surprising at all - there are no lines, lights, or pavement for that matter.

that being said - just make sure if you have an issue on a FSR - get to a public road however you can before you call a tow truck and use that location to report to ICBC.

order the stock mirrors they are pretty cheap (around $22) and they are so cool in their classic chrome - mine arrived at Carter Honda in about two days.

PS - did your braking improve with new pads

Are you sure? ICBC may want you to believe this but some research shows there have beeninstances where claims held up in court even if the vehicle wasn't registered or insured! If you carry insurance and the road comes under the jusidiction of the MVA which most non-private road in BC do you likely have a good case in the unfortunate event of an accident. Before I assumed there is no coverage or took the word of an insurance adjuster I would strongly suggest speaking with legal council.

There is another thread on this topic:

My 2 cents.....otg

I agree - legal counsel is best and I am no expert - I do know that I have been informed by rental agencies that there is no coverage on FSR - caveat emptor.

ANY forest service road IS CONSIDERED public road IN BC. If you are riding an off-road vehicle, unlicenced, it IS illegal. You have to have at least liability insurance (PLPD) AND a plate on any vehicle on any FSR road.. If you have an accident with your licensed vehicle on a FSR, ICBC goes with a 50/50 split on most accidents that take place. Anything less than 2 lane highway (2-lane divided road) most circumstances are a 50/50 fault issue. Variances have been obtained in the courts due to radio assisted vehicles and non radio assisted vehicles that have collisons. Why do you think logging trucks, tree planters, crummies, forestry trucks, etc. have insurance? That covers all FSR raods. That isn't private either, this is ICBC. It is also why BCFS demands having a 5,000,000 3rd party liability policy on the vehicles that are used for running FSR roads, so you are covered in the event of someone who isn't insured driving an unlicenced vehicle on the FSR's illegally. Otherwise there'd be no point having insurance. I had broken down on and FSR before and I got towed, and many accidents have been reported thru ICBC on incidents that happened off road FSR's...logging trucks and lowbeds are a perfect example. It's like a logging truck that runs over a snowmobiler or unlicenced dirtbike. It's considered a public road and the snowmobiler or bike rider gets 100% fault for that. That is why this 80km/h stuff has come into play with the log squad and the RCMP and C&E guys. Too many people are running these roads unlicenced illegally, so they are now out to enforce it to stop unneccesary accidents like those happening.

Working for BCFS we see a lot of this crap going on. I deal with Beacon myself (ICBC for just the PLPD) and they cover me for FSR roads. There are more and more signs going up at the bottom of many FSR's that state offroad vehicles MUST have insurance on them to be able to use FSR's. One of them is very visible from Westside Rd as you head up Sugarloaf to get to Whiteman Main or Bouleau.
