KLR650 signal lights recall

My signal lights literally fell off the bike and were taped on my 08 KLR 650.

And so have many others, just read a little on klr650.net to understand how widespread this problem is.

Its an epedemic really.

I asked the Kawi dealer here in the loops ( yes bought it there to), and they refused me warranty, so i fixed my own with quality LED signals.

Well now I look on the kawasaki website and see its an official recall.

So for the many others who have broken signal lights, do NOT let the dealer tell you its your problem.

Its a recall, right from kawi..... Maybe dealers should not be so fast to say NO, to legit problems being warranty.

Its not like they could not realize it was a problem, because it is not like I have the only KLR with broken signals.....So they had heard from other customers I am sure, that yes they break for no reason.

On a positive note, my LED aftermarket signals work great, and they do not break.

Well its questionable for sure Joker....I am just damned thankful they are a lot better than them orange 950's someone makes....I forget the company name, but its something like Pumpkin, or climbs poorly, constantly needs work, or some damn thing like that.

Maybe you can refresh my memory what them orange bikes are called again once you wash your greasy hands.

Ok....I just have to comment on this. When you first aproached the dealer on this we had not heard of the problem from kawasaki or any other customers. We don't just deny warranty concerns without checking into it first. If the bike had been brought in to us we would have taken a picture of the broken signal and submitted it to kawasaki for warranty approval. The form from kawasaki you have attached is from KAWASAKI USA issued September 30/08. It looks likeit was received on Oct.6/08.We have now had a recall noticeissued to us from kawasaki CANADA dated OCT. 17/08, we received the notice on Oct. 28/08 in the mail. We still have had no other customers come in on this but Kawasaki sends out notices to all affected customers letting them know to come to the dealer for repairs. Usually they send the notice to the customer about a week after the dealers so we know about it ahead of time. Your notice should now be in the mail to you. I have taken the liberty to check your serial number and your bike does fall into the serial number range of the affected bikes. I also checked my own KLR's serial number and mine is ok. I will not get a notice of the recall for mine. I also see you have not had your klr in for the muffler bolt torque recall that affected some of the early release '08's. If we never see the bike we can't make the repairs. To call the signal recall an epedemic is over exagerated. It is only a certain serial number range and they are all the early release '08's from '07.

Just remember folks....Don't beleive everything you read. There is usually two sides to every story. The internet has not helped with this. Seems like people can write anything they want and it is the truth unless it is followed with a "LOL". Just take what you read on the internet with a grain of salt and form your own opinions. :D

Theres a picture of that same KLR deep down a ravine from last year or so. I wish I could find the pic, prety sure that would assist in the falling off of the lights.;)

I'm not saying there is not a problem with the signal but when he approached us in july or august (without the bike!) we had not heard anything. He is still the only customer to come to us about it. Had he brought the bike by we would have taken a picture and sent it to kawasaki canada. They may have still rejected the claim back then but we would have tried for him at the least. And yes...you and I both know that the bike has been on its side many times.....:?

hey Mustexcc should I phone your shop with my serial number to see if I might have a problem, or what should I look for?

I think mine are ok. Dana

Larry @ work has a blue '08 and did have a problem with his left light, but we blamed it on operator abuse, maybe we were wrong,he has a real low serial number

This was in the link to the pdf file of the Kawi recall ...

[align=left]

[align=left]A description of the defect including both brief summary and a detailed description, with graphic aids as necessary, of the nature and physical location of the defect: Summary - the turn signal mounting stalks can break, causing failure of the turn signal to clearly indicate the operators turn intentions. Detailed - the material of the turn signal stalk is inadequate to support the weight of the turn signal unit during the range of vibration and shock encountered in normal operation of the motorcycles. The stalk can break, leaving the turn signal unit hanging by its wires.

If yours or Larry's are in the serial number range affected you will receive a recall notice as long as you gave your correct mailing address when you purchased the bike. IF your address has change and kawasaki was not informed they will not be able to contact you. Then yes, call me with your serial # and I'll check it out for ya....

The recall notice that Mr."ChanceIt" posted is from the US,ours looks a little different but of course the problem is the same. Most of the serial #'s affected would have been purchased mid summer of '07. My klr was early this spring ('08) and it is well past the affected bikes... Again Kawi will send notices to those that qualify...;)

The rubber on the turn signal stalks is defective. My left rear fell off on a trip down south. It was fine when I looked at it and after a short ride it was hanging. I just got the recall notice yesterday and they are replacing all four.

I got this from klr650.net:
The new indicators show the brand name TOKAIDENSO. The indicators that broke have the brand name AMPAS. The dealer gave me back all the old indicators, so I now have spare globes and lenses. All the new KLR650s in the showroom have TOKAIDENSO indicators.
So, something wrong with the composition of the rubber. My notice doesn't mention any vin #'s or build dates so, I'm assuming its all 08's. I'd check the name on the part and see if they match the above.

Just a side note on this....The dealer is required to break the stalk of each light when they remove them and hold them for 90 days incase kawasaki requests them for inspection. This dealer that gave them back is really sticking there necks out. If those get used and "fail" causing an accident that dealer could be held liable.:hr: Don't expect to get them back from the dealer.

Hi Chancy & co, gawd i`ve never heard so much squawking over nothing. If that`s the limit of KLR snafus you got the normal bulletproof Kawi build quality, followed by the kid-after-school assembly job. The real wrenches don`t even see your scoot till the first service. Which is fine as EVERYONE knows to do DAILY checks on their bikes, right? "Oh but i do my own work.", says he. Yeah well you should find loose crap before it breaks then.;)

Sorry to dig up an old thread....but if this helps any 08 owners it's gonna be fine !!!

Signal Recall VIN ranges:

Model# KL650E8F (2008)

JKAKLEE1/8DA00151~DA08352

The plastic is just a bit brittle from what I was told, and will bust free rather easily !!
Off course causeing near death and/or injury :shoot::tup:

The Muffler Bolt Recall:

2002 to 2008 KLR's (we check them all at SG Power to see, simple fix)

2002 JKAKLEA/2DA 00651~A03322
03 " DA03479~A07243
04 " DA07297~A11206
05 " DA13803~A18905
06 " DA22103~A27662
07 " DA28327~A35099
08 " DA00151~A07852

Also if your having issues with Cold Starting your KLR...the auto decompressor, needs to be ground down to give the unit enough compression to start. We've done a couple and Kawi has warrantied the labour. Take it to the Selling Dealer.
