The 400EXC, 450EXC, and 525EXC are all nearly identical bikes. Bore and stroke differences only. The rest of the bike is the same. The cost of the 525EXC isnt that much higher than a 450EXC which in turn, isn't much higher than the 400EXC. The argument that keeps riders away from the 525 is "TOO MUCH POWER!!" OR "It would be too unruly in the technical sections with that much power".

My opinion has always been that I have control of the throttle, so there can never be too much power. Until possibly now. Twist the throttle on this bike and its like being shot from a cannon. I'm about 5'11" 165lb, and I don't know how much power this bike has but it seems to be a popular with the 6'4" 225lb+ guys for some reason.

To tame this tiger, G2 Ergonomics makes a billet throttle tube with interchangeable cable pull cams. The concept is this: for each degree of rotation of the throttle, there is a linear pull on the throttle cable from fully closed to fully open. LINEAR. BUT! Change the Cam on the throttle tube and the amount of cable pull on the first quarter of throttle is less than the amount of pull on the rest of the throttle tube rotation. NON-LINEAR.

Here you can see the mildest cam sitting on top of the stock cam profile. I'm installing the mildest cam for maximum effect.

525DS5G202.JPG

So when you are trying to pick your way through some really technical trail, and surgical precision is required you won't end up with a handful of spinning rear tire. The "throttle" is actually a "throttle" instead of a lightswitch.

525DS5G203.JPG

Pitter patter, let's get at 'er. I've never taken off grips that I intended on putting back on! So usually a sharp knife and you're done in a few seconds. The rat-tail file was a good tool for opening up a passage for the WD40 to spray down inside.

525DS5G204.JPG

I guess it didnt spray far enough down, because the grip just wanted to roll, so I sprayed the exposed throttle tube some more. Rolling the grip back on, it slid off without much effort.

525DS5G205.JPG

525DS5G206.JPG

Removing the cover, you can see this is a 2 cable system - duh! This is just in case your throttle return sticks open (throttle return spring fail) you will pull the throttle closed with the other cable. Just in case you didn't know why there's 2 cables.

525DS5G207.JPG

Yep it's a match!

525DS5G208.JPG

The cam just snaps onto the end of the throttle tube. You could change them over pretty quick I imagine just by pulling the handguard off, and removing the cable housing. No need to remove the grip - of course!

Nothing that moves is going back together without lube!

525DS5G210.JPG

Back together, just need to clean that grip out really well. Make sure there's no WD40 left in there.

525DS5G211.JPG

Reassembled, just ready for some safety wire! That can wait for my "Safety Wire Madness Episode" where I'll add 2 lbs of wire to the bike securing fasteners etc...

525DS5G212.JPG

One more thing that arrived that I had to put on was the seal savers from Siccass Racing. These are the ones that have velcro on them so you don't have to remove your fork tubes.

Up here in the Northwest we see more mud than anything else. The concept of "dust" seals and "dust" boots is a joke. So beneath this "dust" seal is your fork seal. Lots of goo just waiting to get inside there.

525DS5ForkSeal1.JPG

This oughta help those seals last a little longer. There is the velcro that runs the length of the seal (B) and they supply a tie wrap (A) to keep them in place.

525DS5ForkSeal2.JPG

They are neoprene (wet suit material) and fit excellent. I'm sure the ones that slide over fit better, but I can see these doing a terrific job. The only thing is that I expect it will be harder to detect a leaking seal now...

Cheers!:hb:

Just got one of these on order, it's for the KTM Duke II, but I think it'll work, if not look for in the "For Sale".

The company is Laminar Lip http://www.laminarlip.com and they make these things to create laminar flow over the front of your bike (get rid of turbulence/buffeting). So it makes for a quieter, nicer ride.

Also, I gave up on the 25L tank for now. Acerbis keeps saying 1 more month... enough! I have the Clarke 3.2 Gallon on order now,

Not sure what is available out there , but the oil cooler from SUZUKI is prety strong. It seems to hold up well when it hits the dirt.:D

Nice looking rack, how does the 525s subframe look for strength? Is it comparable to the 640s? I guess you could add some gussets if in doubt.

The 525EXC subframe is not as strong as the 640 IMHO. I will not be loading this frame down with much weight at all. No aluminum bags, no kitchen sink. Light and fast is the way to travel with this bike. I'll be throwing some small soft bags over the seat.

Hi All,

I'm in the process of dual sporting a new 450 EXC and have almost got it on the road. I too would like to put on an oil cooler and am wondering what to buy. Any suggestions? I didn't use the stock light, dealer told me I couldn't, so I installed an Acerbis Cyclops which seems to work very well, looks cool also, lol. I am also thinking ofmore fuel capacityand I was thinkingabout the Baja Designs side tank. Has anyone used them and are they any good?

Kim, the Clarke tank will give you heaps more fuel for a start. There has been very good feedback about the BD Sidepanel tanks as well.

If you are serious about the oil cooler, PM me or call me (I'll PM ya my number). I'll be ordering several on Monday or Tuesday next week, and I'm getting a bulk deal ($50 off) The unit is the one made by HT-Racing.

Cheers!

I haven't installed it yet, it's just sitting waiting. Apparently they require a fair amount of work to install. I'll let you know when I do.
