The 400EXC, 450EXC, and 525EXC are all nearly identical bikes. Bore and stroke differences only. The rest of the bike is the same. The cost of the 525EXC isnt that much higher than a 450EXC which in turn, isn't much higher than the 400EXC. The argument that keeps riders away from the 525 is "TOO MUCH POWER!!" OR "It would be too unruly in the technical sections with that much power".
My opinion has always been that I have control of the throttle, so there can never be too much power. Until possibly now. Twist the throttle on this bike and its like being shot from a cannon. I'm about 5'11" 165lb, and I don't know how much power this bike has but it seems to be a popular with the 6'4" 225lb+ guys for some reason.
To tame this tiger, G2 Ergonomics makes a billet throttle tube with interchangeable cable pull cams. The concept is this: for each degree of rotation of the throttle, there is a linear pull on the throttle cable from fully closed to fully open. LINEAR. BUT! Change the Cam on the throttle tube and the amount of cable pull on the first quarter of throttle is less than the amount of pull on the rest of the throttle tube rotation. NON-LINEAR.
Here you can see the mildest cam sitting on top of the stock cam profile. I'm installing the mildest cam for maximum effect.
So when you are trying to pick your way through some really technical trail, and surgical precision is required you won't end up with a handful of spinning rear tire. The "throttle" is actually a "throttle" instead of a lightswitch.
Pitter patter, let's get at 'er. I've never taken off grips that I intended on putting back on! So usually a sharp knife and you're done in a few seconds. The rat-tail file was a good tool for opening up a passage for the WD40 to spray down inside.
I guess it didnt spray far enough down, because the grip just wanted to roll, so I sprayed the exposed throttle tube some more. Rolling the grip back on, it slid off without much effort.
Removing the cover, you can see this is a 2 cable system - duh! This is just in case your throttle return sticks open (throttle return spring fail) you will pull the throttle closed with the other cable. Just in case you didn't know why there's 2 cables.
Yep it's a match!
The cam just snaps onto the end of the throttle tube. You could change them over pretty quick I imagine just by pulling the handguard off, and removing the cable housing. No need to remove the grip - of course!
