And before I go any further, this is in no way directed at spc, who's opinions, comments, and now forwarnings, I greatly appreciate. Keep up the good work spc. This is firmly directed at the bureaucrats who could be doing a lot more to insuring road safety and reducing pollution than worrying about the few dirt bikers wanting to put a plate on their bike.
Safety? Signals, lights, brake lights, etc, are already required to be street legal. I'm curious on this brake tested/approved thing, what's the difference in brakes between street and dirt bikes? Does it have to do with heat dissipation and brake fade, or? I'm sceptical on the plastic tank issue, as plastic these days can be made about as tuff as steel, and as a bonus doesn't rust out. (Not too mention does that mean I may soon only be able to ride my BMW1200GS, with a plastic tank, off road?:hr
Environmental? I'm all for keeping things quiet, so I can see restrictions on exhausts. Of course, if that's the reason, most roadbikes, (and we all know what manufacturer's bikes I mean) would have to lose their plates as well. Exhaust gases/particulates - all bikes should have restrictions on these, not just road bikes. What difference does it make to the environment whether I pollute the air while riding in the woods or riding on the road?
One last comment, and then I'll get off my soap box, and will shut up. As tonybaloney already pointed out enforcement is lacking. Is there anything in the works were ALL on road vehicles will be subject to periodic inspections for compliance with safety and environmental conditions? Last rumour I heard, Aircare was even being considered for the chopping block. :mi::wi::mb::mad3:

Which brings us to the million dollar question, why???The government does not want off road vehicles on the highway so they changed the wording of the manual to make this clear.
