The more pressure, the less likely your tires will blow when you take a hit. Running low is for better traction, not to prevent flats--tires will develop pinch and tear flats much more easily when low. That being saidI run a little lower on gravel for the traction advantage. The best solution will cost you some, but it worked for me: Buy heavy duty tubes and rim locks and ride whatever pressure you want.
