tire pressure.

My KLR staes a tire pressure of 22psi front and 29 for my fat %$# in the rear. If I am out on logging roads for the day, is it safe to run at those pressures, or should they be lowered? I am more concerned about blowing a tube on a pot hole.

Thanks,

Scott

On my DR650 if I am going to be running lots of gravel I let my pressure down, about 15lbs front and rear. Be careful though:spl:with a 650 you put lots of power to the ground, without rim locks your tire may travel on your rim and pinch or fold your tube, so always check the condition of your tube before you start traveling on the highway, or install rim locks. The down side of low tire pressures is the bent rim syndrome, that will depend on the speed you like to travel. Me I am buying another set of rims, I like to go fast:p.

The more pressure, the less likely your tires will blow when you take a hit. Running low is for better traction, not to prevent flats--tires will develop pinch and tear flats much more easily when low. That being saidI run a little lower on gravel for the traction advantage. The best solution will cost you some, but it worked for me: Buy heavy duty tubes and rim locks and ride whatever pressure you want.

Thanks for the reply guys.

One more question. My tires and my manual say 2 different things for tire pressure. Should I go with the manual instead of the tire. That is standard practice with a car, so I am guessing it is the same with a bike.

Definitely go with the manual for general purpose street riding, but trust the Ted Blow or Tom Timmerman "thumb" test off road. The good thing about having the same bike as these guys isI just copy whatever their settings are and have good results. What tires do you run and are youusing HD tuber or stockers?
