I am interested in how you have planned for tires. Do you think the tires you start out on will be the tires that bring you home?

I have commitments that presently keep me in Powell River until June 13th, and then intend on doing pretty much the trip you describe; except for the fast part.

I buy the cheapest tires I can get.
Of course the cheapest is not always the beat.
I just finished wasting a "Kings" set. Don't buy this brand in any tread pattern.
Mine split down both sides on the rear and the front developed a wobble at 4000k.
This trip I'll be using the Kenda D/S 270 pattern.
They slip and slide around for the first 1000k or so but settle down after they are broke in. I get em installed for $80 a set so I'll put up with the drifting.
The A1 guy likes the Bridgestone and are probably the best for this kind of riding.
These last a good long time and for your application they might be best, being you/all are coming from the Island.
Our "Crew" keeps getting bigger and then gets smaller. All I can say for sure when June shows up, those going will be there.

Just so I'm not too confused, are we talking two different rides?

The lastnotes I had wewere talking about leaving Terrace on June 20th.

The tentative roster was

I can only speak for myself and Piglet.
Piglet has signed on with the Army Reserves. His Combat Engineering training starts first week in July. We were looking forward to a visit on the 20th but at this point in time it looks like we/all will meet somewhere on the road.
I'll tell A1 to confirm a date with your group.
These rides are like that and they can get unraveled sometimes. Best thing is to plan a ride by your self, if someone shows up all the better.
See you/all at the campground.
Keep a little slack in your chain:D

I lived in Inuvik for 10 years, and drove the dempster many times (on 4 wheels). I have to recommend a short side trip to just after the NWT border, which rides up one of the ridges to the west of the Dempster. Fantastic views. Its only a 30 minute return side trip, but great views.

I'm in Whitehorse now, looking forward to tracking the progress of the trip.

Its just a small cruise up a ridge, along a double track, that is accessible from the highway. It heads NW off the highway, a few clicks after you cross the border. I think its at 67, 07'08 N & 136, 04'.39W but don't quote me for sure. I'll find out and post before you leave.

Its so wet along the side of the highway, that there are few places to actually get off the road. This ridge is one, and the views are great for photos. There are lots of truck tracks from locals (formerly me), so you can't miss it. Its right around the area called "The Gorge".

The 4-days I've needed off (June 25-28) in order to confirm my spot...have finally got through, socount mein.I'm good to leave PG as early as the 18th, after work.

Anyone else bringing a flyrod?

Just to stay on the list, I will be there ----plan to leave the Vancouver area in time to be in Terrace on the night of the 19th. At this point Eronious Monk and I are planning onriding up together ---however it is not confirmed. Thanks for the tip about the fishing rod--- would have left it other wise.

Okay. So I am already gettingansy about waiting these 40 or so days. I will leave from Powell River on the 15th, or 14th. Ready to go.

I am still worrying about tires, butI really don't want to carry a set, and can't figure where on the trip I should either ship some to, or be ready to order from.

Does everyone have an idea of how far they expect to travel on a tank? Will you carry more than one liter emergency fuel?

Tires.

I will have my guitar, no fishing rod.

Bring an extra liter or two and you will be fine. I had no problems in the past with just the stock tank. If in doubt you can always fill an old oil container and you have a ready spare fuel container.

What kind of tires are you riding on?

On a TKC I get about 5,000, likely double that on a hard bridgestone or Mefo, thats on the rear. The front should get you at least 10,000 Km for a TKC. If you do no pack a lot of junk and are a stealth sort of person who is easy on the gas and throttle you will do better.

I packed a rear last year went to Mexico more or less and I was surprised I sort of like hauling the tire, missed it when it was gone. The inside is a great place to store cans of beer, the big cable I had, and various other things, its no big deal hauling one.

We did find tires hard (impossible) to get up north of BC. I will be running a TKC front and a Mefo rear if I bring the KLR. I will have a couple of spare tires at home that I could get bused up if necessary, but it might not be a bad idea to preorder a set into some shop in Whitehorse for the trip home.

I don't mind providing logistical support, as long as I'm here. I have some travel plans around the times you guys will be going thru, but your dates here seem softish, so we'll have to see. YukonMike and I have a road trip planned, pending management approval of course.

Punctures are possible on the Dempster, but not likely. Shredding is not a serious issue either. Tires are available here in Whitehorse, Yukon Yamaha, Yukon Honda (& KTM), and Lister's (Kawi and Suz) all stock some DS tires. There's a Harley dealer as well. Planes go to Inuvik from W'horse Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so I could put a tire on a plane up to you if req'd. My advice would be to have a spare tube when you leave here, maybe some big patches (for inside tires in a worst case).

Extra fuel is only really a concern on the Dempster, depending how much off-roading you plan on doing.

Again, I can try to help out, I just have to smooth it over with the wife, as she doesn't like it when I hang out with folks I meet on the 'Net. That girl from Thailand didn't go over well in particular, shortly followed by the banker for the rich family in Nigeria.

We did find there were lots of shops around but getting tires to fit the KLR was the tough part, seems like everyone was out.

I never thought of it but we are blessed to have Robert at MTR as one of our esteemed members. He tells me that he can blast us up tires if need be, which is a good ace in the hold so to speak.

Mr, I can find a smaller sprocket yet, A-1 also stocks rubber for KLR.....now where where these folks last time I need some fresh skins for the stead!

For sure these will beon thecontacts list in the good old all weather journal on this coming trip!

We are getting closer and things are getting done. I hear a few old doo's hitting the ground and new ones gettingcarefully installed. The smell of fresh rubber is in the air, many trips to Cambodian tire, and the princess have us equipped and overloaded.



Anyone interested in a tech day? I am not sure what goes on during a tech day but the folks in the big city have them....maybe a little wrenching, a little :hb:should be a pretty safe experience for most of us.



Oh by the way Greg, Blackdog is a level III first aid! {We all take a little oath to do our best not to utilize any such skills}

If there is interest in a tech day I offer up my humble abode, I will even try to clean up the shop, I have most of the tools and nick knacks to bust darn near anything. Send me a PM, if there is an interest I will set something up.

A tech day would be fun but I have too much work to do. My new timing chain should be in at the post office this week, and I will be changing it. It would have been nice to share that operation with a group, but.... The fork brace and raising links are expected later in the week, and that too would have been good for a share.

Weekends are real tight for me until June 13th. I will be watching this newsgroup to see what everyone else is getting on with, but alas, I will only know what is posted not what actually transpired.

One tech day topic that I would like to cover some day, is the KLR650 wiring harness. It is wrought with potential systems failures. It must be protected from mechanical abrasion. There is an electricalway to both protect the electrical system and keep the motor running, but it is not for the faint of heart, unskilled, or affordable if expected from the dealer level.

I am a little curious about your timing chain. Is it for the 2008 KLR and if so, why does it have to be changed already?

My 08 has 77,800 Km on it. The cam tensioner has bottomed out and there are several loose leafs. I tried to reset, (compress) the rivets, but the plates are still too loose to trust for the Alaska trip.
