I got the bike early. May 2007. I had a job in those days and the bike was for trails and work transport. Although the job was only 8 km from home, I would add about 20or 30 km to that trip by trying a different route every day.

On Labour Day 2008 work was over and I went across Canada. Each capitol city -each province. The trip took me east to St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador and South to Key West Florida. It was about 20 states, and again, the capitol cities, including the District of Columbia and Washington.

The kilometers just sort of kept adding up. There have been some mechanical issues. One kept the bike down for a month, before the continental trip, and one kept the bike down for one week during the continental trip. These are stories for the campfire.

The Alaska (North) trip will see the odometer over the top and around to a nice figurein time for a trade to a 2010 bike.

Erronous Monk---My mouth dropped when I saw the number of K's on your bike. My 06 KTM 640 has 10,000. I am very impressed with the K's and that you are doing all the motor work your self. Are you still thinking of us riding up together from Vancouver?? Is it feasable for me to meet you in Power River and we go up Vancouver Island and over to Terrace by ferry??

Terrace by ferry. I am into that. It is not cheap to come to Powell River just for a ride, but if you do come here, you are more than welcome. I have the basic amenities available for a guest or two.

Terrace by ferry is more attractive to me than Terrace by truck. On land I would want to ride. By ferry, we better get a plan together. I would expect reservations to be required.

My last committed date in Powell River is June 13th and even if I don't get out of here that night, my wish is to be heading north by June 15th. One way or another.

Ok lets go by ferry to Terrace. How do we do that and where do we leave from. I am sure that we need to make reservations and such. I am off to the Orca Run this weekend and will be back Monday. Let me know and we can get something organized.

Okay, I am on the Terrace by ferry mission. I already had a look at the schedule from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, but have some questions that I will call BC Ferries about. It also looks like there might be an option from Washington state that I will investigate just for fun, as well.

That sounds great--- this will be a lot more interesting than booting it down the blacktop--- and a geat way to start the adventure.

Departure time 0730 (Port Hardy/Bear Cove - Prince Rupert)
Arrival time 2230
Passenger fee $150
Motorcycle fee $175

Since it is all daylight hours, I don't see any need for a berth nor a reserved seat. Seat $30, Berth $80 or $105.

Reservations are required and must report 90 minutes before sailing. Reservation space was available at the time of this writing.

$325.00 is a bunch of money, (camp fees, gasoline, food) but it takes about half a day less time and saves 800 Km of tire wear.

What say yea? Full fee required for the reservation.

It is a once in my life-time trip so I say yes! Lets do it. I do not need a berth -- there must be seats some where on the boat --tent and sleeping bag on the deck. What day do you want to take the ferry and when do we need to leave Powell River to make it. I would expect oneor more over night's on the island. I can get a visa number to you or if you have a reservation number I can call and give it to them directly. Gordon

Everyone. I am about to make the ferry reservations from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert as the first leg of the Inuvik (North trip) The dates to look at are June 15th, 17th, and 19th. If we get 10 riders we get a price break. For now it is just two of us and the base fee of $325.00

I am not looking to necessarily ride with a big crowd, but it would be nice to meet some riders on the ferry that have somewhat of a common intention.

I see you/all are having a tech day, getting ready for the trip north?
My plans have changes some what.
Piglet broke his arm getting ready for the Wash. State M/X schedule.
Coming into a triple his back wheel failed to hook up and he cased the jump.
They did a Endo together and the machine landed on top.
Didn't hurt the bike but broke the wrist.
So he is in a cast until July and the summer is spoken for.
Has anyone entertained the idea of going to Prudhoe Bay rather than Inuvik?
I want to follow the pipe line from Valdeeze to Deadhorse.
I'll cross over at Skagway to Haienes then to Valdeeze and follow the pipe line north.
This is all tentative of course as I won't know until later if Piglet's arm is going to set right.
We'er still 3-4 weeks away so there is still time to plan and weight options.

I'm fixed on Inuvik and, hopefully, Tuktoyaktuk since I was stationed up there in the '70s with the RCMP. It's about the nostalgia.

I e-mailed Aklak Air this morning about the airfare to Tuk. It's possible to fly in on a morning flight and back to Inuvik on the evening flight. If the airfare is reasonable we can see the Beaufort Sea, the DEW line, and pingos.:clap:

Prudhoe Bay rather than Inuvik? I'm not into this either/or. I want both.

Pipeline, Valdeeze, Deadhorse, Tuktoyaktuk. This will probably be my only trip to the north. Only money will stop me fromgetting to do it all. Money will win.

In just a few weeks and we will be on the road and talk of destinations will subside. The journey will be the focus of attention.

Happy wrenching. Test drive all mods before the trip.

I have booked and confirmed the June 17th, 7:30am ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. The plan is to meet up with Erronous Monk in Comox on the 16th and ride to Port Hardy take the ferry to Prince Rupert gets in at 10:30 pm. Meet up with the fellows in Terrace and proceed from there ot Inuvik. Should be a great trip.

I had quite an interesting day.
I just installed two new tires courtesy of A1.
Do not, I repeat "Do Not" ever run Kings tires on your machine.
My set lasted all of 1000K and started to split.
A1 was good enough to switch them out for Bridgestones TW22.
I then proceed to beat my Corbin seat with a stick for about 1/2 hour.
I recon the seat will be about right in about another 10,000k.
A1 told me to mention he will be leaving the Kootenays around the 15th.
If everything goes fine with Piglet I may strike for P/G around the 10/12th and spend some time with my older Sons.
Maybe meet up with that Pirate Blackdog.
All I need to do is change the oil and Iam good to go.:clap:

Oh yea. I still need to figure out my GPS.
It's a 276 and works good when I can push the right buttons.

BTW the car tire I installed on my VTX is perfect.

OK I thought it was you who figured the cheaper the rubber the better it was....by the way how many kids doooooooo you have. Good advice that stay away from kings..... and for you country boys, its best to avoid the Queens you meet in the big city too. So now you know no kings or queens and buy good rubber and you will be good maybe.:shock::shock::shock::shock:

Good to hear that A-1 treated you good, I am not surprised he is a great shop to deal with, wish he was closer.

I was just down in Vancouver getting some gear for my sidekick, kid Jo. Decided to get some custom made stuff. Josh tells me its going to be here by the time I leave on the 19th.

Its too bad you cant slow your departure down a little I would of loved to ride up there with you and piglet.

I got a Zumo and was all happy to load in the Topo maps but was a little surprised that the topo stuff is near useless for the roads around here at least. I am going to load them for the whole of the Canadian tripanyways they may come in handy One more toy I got was a Cardo Scala Q2 what a cool toy that is. I can answer phone call and listen to radio and the GPS. (Before you all go nuto about the phone call thing, I have family issues and its sort of nice if I can be reached during the day).

For me its just over a month, the list is getting shorter, I still need some mesh pants (any suggestions, the Joe Rocket ones look good) and finish off the tank pannier system for miss piggy. I amgoing to self install and balance the New Best there is TKC on the front of the lady just before I leave. Now if you have ever seen me change tires I am setting aside a weekend for this......I was taught by A-1 and let me say I am the first to admit I am a poor student. In my defense alcohol was involved.

For the last 50 or so years cheap tires have worked for me.
Who would have thought that a company would have the gall to sell tires that fall apart after you install them on your machine.:shock::shock::shock:
Just for the "Record" only my tire philosophy will change. I now believe that the "Cheapest Good" tire is the way to go.:D
MY Son's.
The oldest is a Pepsi Millionaire stationed in P/G.
The second oldest owns CycleLogic in P/G and Quesnel.
The third takes care of my Ranch in the Kootenays and rides a KLR.
Just so as you/all know, I only bought those TW22 tires to impress the guys north of 60.;)
FWIW My GPS reads 110 KPH, my speedo reads 121KPH.

Good on the Cardo, family comes first.

I ordered a new Arai XD3 and now I have to send it back.
It's 2 sizes to small. Those helmets fit way to tight.
Under racing conditions it would be fine but for cruising the fit is harsh.

A1 said he will call.

There is a tour company that operates in the summer, you should be able to get a 1/2 day tour for that or less. It's a fair bit to stick you toe in the arctic ocean, but you'd to go all that way and not do it. Check Arctic Tour Company, or Arctic Nature Tours.

Of course, Jesse James rode a GS up to Tuk in the winter on the ice road and did it, so we'll see.

Erronous Monk and I are confirmed on the Ferry Port Hardy to Prince Rupert June 17th. Gets in at 10:30. So we will be ready to leave on the 20th for points further north.
