I've got my fingers crossed that manifest destiny is just some hippy crap lol!

Ihave read on KTMtalk and ADVrider that the USA is starting to clamp down on RUM bikes also. It is getting harder to get insurance now. Also, it might be wise to keep all the desmog stuff you take off your bike. If things go the way they are, eventually you will need to install the desmog back on your bike. Sounds like theyhave started to check bikes that have been desmogged and/or RUM bikes in the states.

What i want to know is how much effort would be required to get a ubilt status?

http://www.icbc.com/registration-licensing/specialty-vehicles/u-bilt

Skimming through equipment standards link within the main page above it seems like most of these bikes would probably pass. Well, maybe not the 91 db sound check, other than that it seems like as long as your bike can stop and does not have structural damage it should be ok.

Don't know what can be done on a U-built?? All I know from what I've been reading is the US of A is going to start using a country wide data base to check on bikes. Some states have already... andsome states are starting in January to check bike VIN# and "if it is or was" ever a original restricted use motorcycle it is a big NO for insurance/plate.

Some guys have spent money on getting their bikes street legal and a certification from Joe Rocket saying the bike nowmeets street legal requirements.Problem is that now some havespent the few hundred to legalize their bikes onlyto find out they can't get insurance,..... even if they try some of the other states that were easy to get insurance from before. Guess Joe Rocket won't give back their money. Joe Rocket company says that they don't understand as it has not beena problem before.Respectively they are pissed!!!

It also sounds likethe policies regarding RUM bikes down there in the US states right now is inconsistent between states. Kind of sounds familiar as to what is happening here in BC. Eventually, all the of the states will be online with the VIN# data base and it will be a simple NO if it is a RUM bike.

This issue with RUM bikes is a sad one!! I can't see why they are a hazard and I can't see why the government can't work with us to keep them road legal.:X

The problem is the line in there somewhere that says "the vehicle must appear substanially different from the donor vehicle" or words to that effect.

I've seen the document stating that, and it seems pretty subjective to me. Also if there is nothing regarding that in the equipment standards set out in B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act Regulations then they are contradicting themselves. The page outlining equipment standards is conveniently down right now so i'll have to look later.

I am not opposed to putting ape-hangers on to pass inspection lol! Feels like the one sure fire way around this is getting a ubilt status.

Maybe just buy a set of Acerbis plastic in adifferent color. :D

That makes it "look" substantially different.

I hear that someone in California is building custom frames for dirt bikes so you can transfer parts from stock bike and go get serial numbers assigned just like the chopper guys.

Unfortunately I think a 'custom' frame is what it's going to take. I was lucky enough to get my KTM inspected a couple weeks ago. I was wearing a big grin for a couple days. I submitted my paperwork and thought positive thoughts. Then I got a call from ICBC and I knew I was screwed. They wanted a photo of the frame sticker (forget the acronym) that showed it met CDN standards. All I had was the one that said "competition use only" and I knew that wasn't going to cut it. They were after the inspector the day after I emailed the picture. He got his peepee whacked.

Like it says on page 1 of this thread, if the sticker doesn't say 'motorcycle' or MC or if there is no sticker it's not to be inspected.

Thats really crappy Dragonfly, you would think that they would have better things to do. But it does seem to be ICBC job to screw us.

I am still wondering who opened up this can of worms? Transport Canada sets the standards on all import vehicles yet I see RH steeringJapanese hand me downs, British cabs and tour busses and all sorts of weird vehicles on the road none of which I assume carry a CanadianVehicle Safety Standards compliance sticker. BC ministry of public safety provided the process to inspect and qualify all sorts of non-compliant vehicles for a plate and insurance.

I wonder what would happen if you took a RH steering car in for inspection now? Would they deny a plate? Could someone have pressured Transport Canada to close the door on inspections because it pretty well nullified their whole compliance approval process. In whose best interest would it be to have this happen?

Logic leads me to believe that those in a position to profit by shutting the door on RUM bike registration could somehow be at the root of all this. If a company spent considerable dollars in achieving compliance how happy could they be that there is a work around allowing other importers to avoid the costs of compliance testing?

Food for thought........

the chopper builder guys start with no serial #,and no compliance decals, yet they get plated. if push comes to shove this is how i will build my "motorcycle". a bare frame or piece of chromemoly pipe should be enough of a starting point,to get a bc assigned vin#. i keep diggin, and i will find out what it takes to pass an inspection!

As a RHD owner myself, I've followed this to an extent. There is talk of cracking down on imported vehicles as well. It's already happening in other provinces, to the best of my knowledge. "They" sure seem to spend a lot of time, money and manpower on things that I don't really see being of any benefit. But I suppose that's the same rant everybody gives.

I'll get rid of my rhd before I cave on my plated RUM. That or move on to a factory plated 530 exc, which is somehow legal despite being basically a converted dirt bike :shoot:

you don't need a new frame on a u-build,they just want recipts for where the assorted parts come from.i just viewed a freshly built u-built sports car that looked very much like an earlylotus elise, but couldn't have been as they are not admissable in canada:shock:

jipperr: yup that's what i'm thinking. start picking up used MOTORCYCLE pieces from garage sales etc,and put together a ubilt according to THEIR RULES AND REQUIREMENTS,and go in and get a plate for it.

As I've said before, I think this crackdown is simply wrong. I firmly believe that most RUM bikes are at least as safe as comparable MCs. We need to fight this.

That said, until we can get this straightened out I also think we each would be smart to play by ICBC's rules - Like it or not, they hold all of the cards.

Remember that getting a plate is not just getting that piece of metal, but is about getting an insurance policy that protects you, your family, and other road users. If you take actions that in ICBC's narrow view allow you to fraudulently purchase an insurance policy and you need to make a claim, at best your claim would be denied, and at worse you could face criminal penalties. If due to your actions yourself or others are killed, injured, unable to work, lost property, ect do you have the potentially millions of dollars you will be liable for? Are you willing to give up your house? Who will provide for your family if you can't?

Fighting this is something we need to do. Trying to sneak one under the radar in the hopes that we don't get caught just doesn't seem like the smart way to do it.
