Something that has not been mentioned here is that numerous RUM bikes do not meet the emission standards set out for street bikes. Things like coolant overflow sound and pollution. It is the extra power obtained by these higher emissions that attract riders to these bike. These are things that TC looks at when a bike is considered for road use, off road, or closed course. They each have separate standards to adhere to. Taking the anti-pollution box off a KTM EXC changes it's compliance. As does jetting, drilling out and adjusting pilot screws and exhaust changes.
My understanding is that at some point the serial #s of RUM bikes will be run and plates pulled. By signing the registration you " certify that all information on all pages of this form is true and agree that you are responsible for any inaccuracies on any page or pages of this form. So stating that the body style is MC rather than RUM would invalidate the whole process.
Yes we have gotten away with plating these bikes in the past. The over sight is being sighted and corrections must follow.
With out the regulations of TC we would see an onslaught of junk on the road that would really bring attention. Then we would have a a situation similar to what is happening here now. Where only bikes deemed fit for the purpose are allowed. It is possible the proliferation of China made bikes and maybe cars is the catalyst here. Could be that the manufactures of the RUM bikes that also have Approved units are behind the push to keep new comers out.

No they did not qualifylegally. The inspection facilities used the wrong criteria to improperly approve rums.

How can you prove that your bike meets the Fuel System Integrity??
Fuel System Integrity??...WHAT...these "RUM" bikes are meant to jump, ride at 100 miles per hour though the desert...I would have to say there is nothing wrong with Fuel System Integrity or anything else with these "RUM" bikes.I do realize that you DOT types must follow the party line...BUT whatis needed is some REAL common sense...we are already regulated to death in our day to day lives..:mad3:...whats next...MUST ride wrapped in bubble wrap?????or do you already have too and don't know it???
Every manufactured street legal bike must pass the fuel system integrity check.

Running through the desert is a lot different than getting T-boned by a car, then laying in your bikes fuel because the tank wasn't as good as it could have been.

OTG has a good point in there, #3.

A buisneess oportunity exists for dealerships to have a kit and compliance package for the bikes that can be easily converted. Horn, lights, cute stick on reflecters, plate holder, hot-line to the MV branch, a sticker to replace the regi status of the bike. All for the lowlow price of...

Themanufacturer/dealer reps association could lobby to gain that ability in thier network? Are they that motivated , have they done it in other places, etc.
Once again (starting to sound like a broken record) the installation of lights and tires does not make a rum street legal. If it was that easy then you'd be able to order it from the factory that way.

Well the tank has a DOT stamp on it does that count ?
I've never seen a tank with DOT on it before.

fartypants, could you tell me then how the plastic tank/petcocks ass'y on my buddies 07 ktm 450 exc (street legal from factory) is more structurely sound than the plastic tank on a compareable 06 ktm? i think that you going to be laying in gas on just about any bike crash. you seem to have a vested interest in banning any and all motorcycles that you deem unfit for our roadway's. so far from a common sense approach these statements don't hold much water. i think that most of us are feeling that we are being singled out, when if you want to get all engineery and technical on us, you better be useing the big stick approach on the huge numbers of homebuilt choppers that spend all of there time on our highways and streets. i use my plate just to get to the dirt, i don't ride my dualsport bike from pub to pub on a saturday. just my opinion here but the powers that be have bigger fish to fry than the dualsport crowd. i for one am going to be looking into how to get this situation changed.

Going foward fine, no more rums getting registered. But all others that were properly inpsceted should be grandfatherd.

The day we are denied renewal on our insurance from ICBC i saywe file a "Mass Lawsuit" against TC, ICBC,CVSEany other aganecy. I don't care if the inpectors did not follow rules of the law, maybe they did not receive proper intruction before.

correct me if i am wrong but in Quebec and Ontario and maybe Manitoba allow you to insure and ride ATV's and Snowmobiles on streets?

I have seen plates on them.

If they do ? how is it done?
Ok, you're wrong.:p At least for Manitoba.

All motorized vehicles in Manitoba must be licensed and insured(yup, you get a plate), this includes ATVs, dirt bikes, snowmobiles... but you cannot ride them on the roads. In fact if you cross the road you must do so at 90 degrees, anything less is deemed traveling on the roadways and will get you a ticket. On the Army base I lived on, they even carved a dirt road around the outside so that the guys could ride to work. No one I knew even considered trying to convert their RUM bikes in Manitoba so I'm not sure if you even could.

It's nothing personal although you seem to think it is. It is not "ME" it is me doing my job. I don't deem bikes unfit for the road, Tansport Canada does at the time of manufacture.

The plastic tanks I have seen that are on MC's are way thicker than the ones I have seen on Rum's. The bottom line is, one has been tested and proven to meet the standard and the other hasn't.

fartypants,my apoligies,i'm not picking on you! but yes i'm upset at this new rule that has just been rammed down our throats. and yes i also assumed that it was some how " your job" to make this happen. so what are you folks doing to the homemade out of non approved parts, lights, etc chopper crowd? or is the ubilt bike status the key to getting a bc assigned vin,and inspection, approved to ride in bc?

maybe a class action lawsuit would grab the governments attention.seems reasonable to sue the government if ones bike is now deemed illegal after it was inspected and found roadworthy.likely a huge number of people can be affected by this, thus the lawyers may have a field day

If you read the posts that fartypants and I have written you will see that it is not a new rule.

People have been playing with the system to get RUMs licenced. Look at these comments someone on this forum made about getting his RUM licenced.

and for me my agent was dumb so that worked in my favor and in 20 minites I was done.

Another way is to ask to get the bike registered only, so you can get storage insurance, then take the registration to another agent and see if they will without inspection give you insurance.

This shows me that people know they should not be licencing dirt bikes but are trying to do it anyway.

Yes some people have shirted the system But what about the members that went to a licenced bike shop in good faith and bought a plated rum bike from them Thinking it was legal & legit??? The shop did all the work and sold you the finalproduct and had it insured for you( what you thought was) a street legal bike

I'll tighten up my question a little bit just so it doesn't get lost in the clutter. there's 2 questions there,i'll break them apart if need be.

The shops knew they should not be doing this andI have been warning about this issue on this forum for about 2 years. Check some of my posts.

The bulletin is to prevent any new RUMs from being licenced it does not address the bikes already plated. I do not know if anything is in the works for RUMs that are already licenced.

So at this point, besides the Japanese bikes it looks as though the KTM 450/530/690 are the only bikes that have actually gone through certification process, and have the MC designation on the compliance label. Is this accurate?
I talked to Kenco and he stated that the NVIS on the Husaberg says MC on it but the compliance sticker on the bike says comp use only.
What about the Husqvarna TE's. I believe that they are legal to plate in the US, can they not be imported to Canada and made legal?
