The problem with the tanks is more the fact of no shut off on a crash or layover than materials usedfrom what i've learned.

I understand the principle of a fuel shut off requirement, we already have one on our tanks. Oh, meaning one that is determined by whether the engine is running or not. I don't believe my street legal DS steed has one of those. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. And I don't believe any of my rockets had such a contraption either. Now how could the MOT suggest that this may be a new reg? I sure as hell don't want some new doodad failing and shutting off my fuel whilst I am performing some unbelievable manouver(however unlikely on a KLR). Vented tanks will leak and carbs will overflow, automotive tanks rupture and engines have fuel fires, blah blah blah.

Again, why should a RUM require such a device? Most riders have a basic instinct to get their steed back on its feet before any other outlaw should take notice.

More and more, the regulatory proposals by the MOT reflect their lack of knowledge on the issues and leads me to further support the notion that such a venture is result of ECO-Warriors who somehow have the MOE in their arse pocket.

So that raises the issue of emissions and noise pollution. How again, are any such regulations justified either. Aircare itself is as much a scam as the gun registry, I'll omit personal experience, but will say that the emissions criteria can easily be defeated by anyone with any savy. So blame the 2 smokes then. Again, the logging trucks that use the same FSRs that I do spew carcinogens by the tonnes and the racket offered by the engine braking is quite significantly above the noise of my thumper. When I encounter wildlife I shut her down and enjoy, only to put myself at risk to other lurking carnivores. Such is life.

I don't know if R U M stands for anything, but it's a term for a non-street legal bike that has been made "street legal".

And as far as Gas Tanks go. I thought is was that gas seeps though most after-market pastic tanks and those tanks are not DOT.

As said below it's: Restricted Use Motorcycles.

I thought some more about the "fuel and "frame issues quoted from the discussion with MOT.Let's take a couple of "high end" street legal DS bikes, the new BMW X-challenge 450, and the BMW HP2. Both of these bikes have woefully inadequate tank capacity, and since there are nogood options for a larger tank, riders carry fuel in strap on containers, that is if they want to ride anywhere that is really off-road and out of the way. Just how safe are loose (plastic) cans of gasoline????

Any serious Ds'd bike I've seen has a bolted down, oversize tank.By the way, in the marine world, flexible plastic bladder tanks are approved for this use and are installed inboard.

MOT/ICBC won't have a good technical argument, but we had better do somework putting together good counter argumentswhen they raise any other issues. If we do this right, we canrestrict anypotential non-compliance issues to maybe a minimal retrofit and re-inspection,to continue street-legal status.

Good points bark buster, especially the last paragraph. As I see it though, yes potentially an issue if you have a rear mount accessory tank with the fuel line petcock set up, more so if you were daft enough to route your lines near hot exhaust components. Yet most approved fuel tanks are mounted above hot engines with plastic/rubber fuel hoses, a LEGAL set up. Once again I remind you to look at the automobile requirements and enforcement. How many times have you driven around with a loose Jerry can flinging around you pick-up bed? Ever notice the older Jeeps, LandCruisers, and LandRovers cruising about with Jerry cans strapped above their bumpers? You wouldn't probably attempt inspection with spare fuel accessories on board, would you?

Perhaps we as riders, unfortunately have to wait this out as suggested and see what becomes of it. 2 wheels and the road worthy requirements is all that should be needed. We must have at least one member that is a lawyer, or a member that knows one who could provide a little Pro Bono should the need arise.

I think this is making a Mountain out of Mole Hill. :hr:

If your bike has past inspection and is street legal why worry?

Now if you have non-dot turn signals and some-one hits you because they didn't see your signal. Would you be in trouble? But on the other hand, what if you used hand signals? It makes no sense.

The only thing on my Bike the Police have ever check for, is the License Plate on the back.

I really hope you are right, but unfortunately there is provincial precedent in Quebec, and Ontario is now doing some of the same to RUM bikes. There were a lot of XR650Rs and other rum bikes for sale at bargain prices in Quebec last year, because they pulled the plates on them. It would be nice to say it could never happen here, but......

I was in Vancouver on Saturday, and the service manager at a large dealer theretold mehecould see some changes coming.

Like has been mentioned several times before, as soon as they startticketing altered vehiclesthey open up a can of worms. 20" rims on cars with low profile tires, modified exhausts, spoilers, lift kits on trucks all become illegal. Target one group and risk a class action suit for discrimination. They have bigger problems than DS bikes like guns, armored vehicles, unsafe commercial vehicles.

Last year Ichallenged anyone to let the forum know about being ticketed or subjected to a road side inspection and never saw one post.

It might be wiser to let a sleeping dog lie!

Knowing my luck I would be the guy who gets into an accident ,than find out I have no insurance.

Plus, there have beenpeople on the site...thinking they know whats going to happen,so that's why I'm going to the straight to the horses mouth with ICBC and MOF.

If I have to get rid of my "RUM" bike it would suck, but I want to somewhat know I'm legal and have insurance if I go out for a ride.

Also no one has every posted they have been busted on there "RUM",so this is a good thing so far.

If you went and insured the bike (the one the VIN matches), stuck the decal to the plate, and attached the plate to the bike you are insured. plain and simple.

as for unsafe bikes. look at all the piece of shit cars and trucks on the road with bald tires amongst other things, even in the snow these fools have bald tires and get into accidents.

Everyone is insured even tho there vehicle may not be in good shape.

Now if you were to kill someone on your bike or cause great injury then thats when id be worried about your lack of signals/exploding gas tanks etc. but this is why you have the 1 to 5 million liability optional insurance which id recommend getting 2million at least in case u get sued.

i agree with a previous poster, this is being over analysed.

Some of those bikes are bloody death traps.

We will just have to wait and see what happens.

My bike is unchanged from when it passed inspection and got insured. If I ever get in an accident and find that I am not covered, I think the fault would lie with the shop that did the inspection and passed the bike, especially because they sold and installed all the parts to pass inspection. You can be sure I would do what I could to get compensation if it came to that.

As for whether or not my bike could be made illegal in the future: ride your bike every chance you get. If it does come to pass that your bike is now illegal, you made the most of it while you could. If it doesn't happen, you had some great fun and get to ride it some more!

I disagree with you. There has been almost 1000 hits on the topic since I posted it last week,so there must be interest in this.Every couple of weeks I see someone posting with questions DSBC about DSing a "RUM" bike and everyone seem's to have an opinion on it.That's why I am tying to get some answers soDSBC members can make there own choice on these bikes. Also withmy wife and I owning 2 of these "RUM" bikes I definitely have an interest in it.

Absolutely there should be some concern in this matter. For me at the moment it is not concern as I have a legal DS. However, new regs may limit my next purchase option, and the choices are somewhat limited as it is.

The matter isn't so much as to the possibility of the proposed RUM regs, more of a question why are we being singled out and what is the justification? Who's agenda is this really?
