Several years in the planning, delayed due to a pandemic and more recently perhaps delayed, due to pissed off Truckers!
It's looking like we will be returning to the Copper Canyon on March 5 on what is planned to be an epic month long venture into and out of the depths of many of the available canyons that make up the Copper Canyon area of mainland Mexico. Among those are 6 that dwarf the Grand Canyon in depth, in the words of a local while at the Worlds largest zip lines at Barranca del Cobre , "those Americans are so proud of their one Grand Canyon, here we have six!" a comment followed with heaps of laughter.. Here's a stolen info clip from the Brittanica site, " Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre), in the western part of the state of Chihuahua, reaches depths of 4,600 feet (1,400 metres) in places". That elevation makes for a spectacular zip line ride.
In 2018 a similar group of us went to the copper canyon on 990's and 1190's... After riding the length of Baja (along the way going for a float on the Sea of Cortez in Al's now dead boat!) we crossed from La Paz over to Topolobampo then east to Villa Union then north up into the Canyons. Our group has the very good fortune of having two of the Loop's best "A type" guides planning the trip. Those being Floyd and Stu who I will thank right now, thanks for doing all the much needed homework (homework yuk). The scouring of maps for tracks then verifying with g-earth that the tracks still go thru then getting the chosen routes onto GPS tracks, requires many many hours work!! The 3rd member of our posse is Robin who is bringing with him his career of moto related mechanical knowledge. Which leaves me, the old fart getting bald guy bringing up the rear, who's just super happy to come along.
The trip will begin with the dull, but necessary for this trip, multi day slog in a truck full of, "road food" eating methane machines, to near the Mex border where we will store that truck and unload the four ktm 690's. Updates along the way will be sporadic as wi-fi allows, but will in any case be updated upon arrival back home. History has proven that my trusty Panasonic takes heaps of pics. on these trips, more than a few will be posted.. Quite likely other parts of the group will post up here from time to time.
Awhile ago Stu texted the left pic. showing the room spanning start of the route planning process. The greatly condensed and more detailed track highlighted maps on the right were texted over three months later. What is not shown, are the empty cans of beer that I know are in the pictures.
He's also been sending screenshots from his fone, which is constantly reminding him of how many minutes and seconds it is til the stupidly early 5am departure.

Playa Requesan south of Mulege for the night. Nice place to camp, stayed a lazy week here a couple years back.
At the ferry about to sail off for Topolobampo. Where they oddly were just finishing up on serving the "included in the ticket" dinner, and we had just boarded. It was tasty Mexican style cafeteria food and enuf to fill our guts when topped with a beer, made us happy, riiight up until the booming music and partying truckers started and lasted til the last moments before arriving in Topolobampo.
(which is just plain fun to say, Topo-lo'bampo! )
After some searching around a mostly empty and darkish theatre room to sleep in was found, not many people watching movies when there's partying to be done upstairs.
This last teaser shot for this introductory post. Also from our last trip, is a good representation of what we expect of the roads ahead.. Way way down there, heading towards the top left of the pic., the sinuous roads climbs back up the other side of this many thousands of feet deep canyon.
That, brings this first post to an end. Over the next 2 weeks the plan is to post a pic. here and there of the 2018 trip to hopefully to drum up some interest, in our boring little month long adventure..
