Ok, I just did some research. The approximate travel/road distance between Huaraz (Ancash) and Cusco (access city to Machu Pichu) "can be around" 862.47 km to 937.46 km. No kidding - that's what it said. What does "can be around" mean?? There's only one road! Hugs, Ann

I'm guessing it depends on how you cut the corners. If you've got the road all to yourself (unlikely) the drive is shorter.

Reid al does have a cell that works here 250-318-0098 if you get ahold of him get him to give you the gps info and to stay put, thanks for your help . Ann s far as distance in peru it goes by hours because of all the bs you go through. The motos getaround good down here though, if its 3 hours by car it can be 2 to 2 and a half by bike, so far the police have left us alone wich helps also. Did i mention foods the shits well i'll say it again. Hasta luego

well this is getting pretty cool now- lots of folks helping you guys find each other! i just got a call from Max He heard from Big Al a little while ago. Al says he will be in Cusco tomorrow jan 8th. so Max and Ann if you can contact Big Al tell him to pour up a big glass of Rum,find someone that wants to hear a great story or seven and to stay put until the boys can catch up to him. Ann i believe it was you that said Al has a way of popping out on the trail just ahead of you, even though he started way behind?? Robin I have no idea if you guys have access to a telephone to contact Al,but if you do or don't hopefully he will still be in Cusco when you get there. please let us know how this all works out.

well the riding in peru is beyond expectations but the food
is well below. I don't think there is much for refrigeration
in the small towns. the food in the cities seems to be okay.
the great riding makes up for the bad food

I hope you all become one group again soon. Please post up as soon as everyone's all together. Marks spot checks are coming in usually twice a day so those are nice to see.

Ok . , we got ahold of al and we will hook up with him in 3 days in cusco, it will be cinco amigos again. Mark and wayne meet back up with floyd and myself today. They had a great ride over corredella blanco and hit a elevation of 16098 feet , the klrs had there tongues hangin out . Hauraz is a bigger city so we've been able to find some better food yahoo! Elevation here is 9700 feet so you do notice it when exerting any type of energy , like exsisting . Were on the road to cusco tommorow and hitting a 14500 foot pass on the way . Regards

hey all, back to the land of the living and though i havent met montezuma, i have felt his revenge!
sorry ged no pics of waitresses or dancing girls.
rosco, we are to date at -55k not too shabby at all, and the next few days will put us in the plus category and over 12000k total. yes we are following the route planned, which was basically no route! and so far its working well floyd had waypointed some high lights here in peru, from a site he had visited "the short way round"
the southernmost town is Usbuia Arg.
Wow! we as you all know blitzed our way thru central america as it was the path to the real adventure and we certainly have found it here in Peru, unreal scenery, we have crossed over three passes that were each over 15000ft and the pass mark and I crossed the other day (a must do on marks checklist waypointed on g-earth) was 16000, an impossibly steep zig zagged road to above the andean glaciers, way cool we ever got snowed on a bit. I'm running a set of kenda k270's and the front tire has worn out way before the rear as a result of the braking required on the endless corners, it wouldnt be a stretch to say we've rounded well over a thousand switcback corners on dirt and pavement. We have had some challenging mud sections as well in the construction areas, one one section we passed a bus being dragged up a hill by a large haul truck and at one point i passed a bus (opposing) in mud that was actually oozing down the slope of the road, great stuff.

time for some pics as its been awhile, and as stunning as the scenery is here, the pics run a little behind the times. i mentioned a while back about some wild goings on around new years, everywhere we went, well whaddaya think.

every town we passed thru the roads were blocked by dressed up people looking for small change and way too may men dressed in drag, which is meant to be the wife of the paper mache puppet which will be burnt at midnight 9and leapt over) to bring good luck for the new year

when clearing out of bogota we stayed at a "motel" which in latin america is the place you go for an hour or so, for, "relations" nudge nudge wink wink, and even spend the night if yu like each room has a garage, for discrectionary purposes. it actually was a pretty nice place to stay and they even made us coffee in the morning.

for some reason there is a window for looking into the shower, why would anyone want to do that?

i got "lucky" and had a regular bed the other guy beds were heart shaped, i did however get heart shaped pillows and a condom placed on the towel beside the bed, and dead sexy mood lights over top

and speaking of sexy how bout those boots, hubba hubba, this was in panama city where it dumped utterly torrents of water for a couple of minutes, stopped and then again in the next couple, so we hid out at a gas station for a bit.

we came across a blocked road, where we proceed to ride up to the front of the line where robin would answer the questions that we get asked at every occasion, where are we from, where are we going, and how much does the bike cost

in equador we pulled into a gas stop and were suddenly swarmed by a bus load of very exuberant and semi drunk young men who were very happy to meet us and were offering some sort of clear booze in little shooter glasses, "but we're riding and can't drink" they said its ok as they were all police recruits

yup, a family of four and not a boot glove or helmet or even a sock between them

how else are you going to deliver glass in a town that revolves around moto based deliveries

i was asked about language and communication, well heres a couple of spanish phrases for you.
"zona instables 100mts" a highway sign that roughly translated means, hang on because in 330 ft there is a good chance you are going to launch that big fat Klr over the uneven road ahead.
"toque claxon" , honk your horn as the corner you are about to round is so tight you need to give/receive warning to oncoming drivers that you are there.
"no addelantar", which means no passing, a sign that can be seen on a highway beside a double solid line, or a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, or as you approach a switchback corner on a scant one lane road, in reality each sign was bought and placed at fiscal year end as a way to spend money and in fact means nothing at all because you can pass or be passed anywhere anytime, and at any speed.

all for now more pics next time.
wayne

and now for some domestics, Mom glad your home from the hospital. And a huge thanks to those that are repeatedly shoveling my sidewalk.

he had that dakar shirt before he left home not sure if its his only one but ive seen it lots, he bought it at the baja race this year. (i actually only have two tshirts, anda dressy-ish one)
he may be farther south, but ar the border he blined to lima as in hasnt taken the twisted mountain passes we've taken and as far as distance we'll see who has more in a few days when we hook up. ab yes that leaking elbow of his, just when it stops leaking he whacks it again, ouch, he is keeping it well bandaged up tho.

Floyd and myself arrived in cusco saturday night at 11:30 . It was a ride from hell, floyd had a blow out about 2oo kilos from cusco and along with a major detour past some road repairs it set us back a couple hours . Anyway wayne and mark took off ahead of us and we would meet up in cusco , it was dark by the time floyd and me got going from the tire change spot but we decided to push through to cusco . Mistake ! It started pouring almost immediatly it wasn,t to bad until the visor and glasses got water on both sides of the lences and pretty much lost visability, and my light was shining alittle high so every one took the liberty of hitting there high beams at me and leaving them on. Some numbnuts in a minivan decided to park on a corner on the dowhill and as we were coming up a semi came barreling around the corner balls to the wall in our lane to avoid numbnuts with air horn on lock mode , floyd got around him alright but with my lack of vision and pure terror i made a hard swerve to the right and hit the brakes hard to avoid a sharp and sudden fall off a mountain , well i ended up skidding the back end of the bike into the foot and a half by three foot concrete dith that runs these major roads . It took two of us with the bikes power aiding to get it out ( numbnuts sat there and watched as i called him a few choice words) only `100 more k to go oh boy. We made it alive ! Never again am i driving at night down here. Anyway its sunday now and we hav'nt found wayne and mark yet. We went to the hotel apu huascaran were we are to meet al, the guy at the desk tells us he left yesterday. What! Well i guess he,s on his own. Later folks

we're here! arrived approx. 10:30 after a moist ride here. entertaining ride to say the least, though the added attraction of the looming thunderstorm stayed a mtn. away. the peruvians must hate led lights as we were both constantly being flashed so it was almost a leave them on high and f'em. the worst part of the ride was a very long straight stretch not far from cusco, there must have been something on the road as my glasses suddenly became all blurrry and starry with the on oncoming lights leading to a scary high beam incident, removed the glasses and alls well. hunted all round the san blas church area and no go with the place al was supposed to be so we found a place to sleep and hide the bikes, just ate breaky now to find the boys. This is under the adventure thread for a reason, last night was one of those reason.
sitting here with a devilish grin, wayne (and mark)
