Yes, similar to Dead Zone...except more single track, less two track...either bike will work for you. Hopefully no snow. We are routing lower in the valleys to avoid it.

I just wanted to take a second to thank our Island guys whom have been bustin their humps especially the past month, to put this first run together:wi:. It is challenging, given the wacked weather we have had this season, and now that the thaw is on and only a couple weeks to put all the routes together, I am sure has been stressful. :hr: This includes all the behind the scenes organizing as well, not just out on the trails.

Just think, in a couple weeks it will be all over, you will get to ride, and show off our "Treasure Island" with pride, knowing yah all did a great job, and next years ORCA run can only get better and easier!

Keep up the great job guys, you know who yah are, and thanks again:hb:

Wehave been asked a few times how the Orca Run routes compare to the Dead Zone Rally... here's my take on it so far...maybe others will post their thoughts too. As usual, weather has a huge effect. Rain moves everything up one level.

A loop options- for lighter bikes, very challenging. Some steep, rocky bike destroying trails, slippery roots, muddy sections. Not many, we concentrated mostly on B for the first year.

B loop... similar to Dead Zone but with longer single track sections and less of the easier two track, hard to catch your breathe unless you stop to rest. You should be fairly fit and ride with a buddy or group to help at the more difficult sections. Will be a few mudholesand flooded sections. Some pavement riding to connect thesections. Best for 250/ 525size bikes. Could be 650 friendly for very good riders with lots of stamina and 950 friendly for top riders. Island terrain is rockier, slipperier and steeper than the interior.

C loop.. easier than the Dead Zone. Because of snow, the route willfollow main valley logging roads, twisty paved roads and one optional section of entertaining Trans Canada Trail. Somemud and slippery spots. Quite long with bailouts.

As with any rally, all riders should be prepared for a day in the backcountry by carrying water, snacks, a first aid kit, local road map, cell phone, tools, tire repair kit and spare tubes. Body armour, rain gear, helmets and off road boots are a must. Weather can change quickly.

Never ride alone!

Keep in mind, this isour first Island event so we are keeping it simple. Bring your own food and supplies to the campsite. We will provide barbecues and bottled water on site but thats about it! Mill Bay is the best place for supplies, food and beer. But there are stores and pubs close by in Shawnigan Lake Village. Campsite facilities are barebone. Water, outhouses and firewood.

Try to bring the exact amount for entry and campsite fees, or small bills at least. Check here for fees...

Everyone should have a great ride and fun weekend. :dr:Lets hope for sun! :ss:

B loop looks good from what I've seen I had no major issues on the 640 Adventure. As Mike said no one should be doing any trail alone. We aren't far from civilization but well for me my bike is heavy and ppl to help lift are greaaaaaat!

Best routes from the mainland....

Take the ferry to Swartz Bay.

By RV orDSBC Bus

Take Highway 17 south, right on Mackenzie Ave, then right on Highway 1, up the Malahat, left on South Shawnigan Lake Rd, left on West Shawnigan Lake Rd, finally left on Renfrew Rd to the Campsite.

Or follow the map posted earlier in this thread to Mill Bay for camping supplies, food, beer....

By Motorcycle...

We will have a twisty route to ride to the campsite available by map and GPS soon for you to download.

It will take you through the back roads of Saanich and the Highlands over to Highway1 at Goldstream Park then north to Shawnigan Lake.

(NOT bus or RV friendly! ) :hr:

TG6 adds...

I have to go over to the mainland on the 25th and will be coming back on the 3pm sailing (same day) I'll be riding the twisties up to the campsite, so anyone that wants a guided tour, let me know and see you on the 3:00 o'clock sailing out of Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.... I'll be on my R1200GSA...
